New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2022 Hard cover, in black paper covered boards, orange titles to the spine, with the dust jacket of pink and orange picturing a young boy at the piano, first American edition, 431 pp. Condition: Fine (as new). D/j: Fine in mylar. This is British author Ian McEwan's eighteenth novel, which The New Yorker has put upon it's Best Books of the Year List. The epic tale follows Roland Baines from his boarding school youth, through marriage to his cancer-stricken wife, who disappears into Cold War Germany, and onward through the twists and turns of life in the modern age. The Associated Press says," ...one of the joys of the novel is the way it weaves history into Roland's biography as well as the lives of other characters in the book. There are other themes here McEwan explores in depth--from envy to ambition to what truly constitutes a life well-lived -- but the pleasure in reading this novel is letting it wash over you." . New York: Random House, 2022 New, First Edition hard cover, 288 pp. The award-winning Maine author Elizabeth Strout continues the fictional life of Lucy Barton, in this recently published exploration of life during lockdown. Whisked away from New York to small-town coastal Maine by her well-meaning ex husband, Lucy is confronted with the loss of loved ones, the pain of isolation, but also new friendships and love which grow out of the ashes of the pandemic apocalypse. "With her trademark spare, crystalline prose--a voice infused with "intimate, fragile, desperate humaness " (The Washington Post)--Elizabeth Strout turns her exquisitely tuned eye to the inner workings of the human heart, following the indomitable heroine of My Name is Lucy Barton through the early days of the pandemic. ..Rich with empathy and emotion, ..she vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace and possibilities that those long quiet days can inspire."
