The sale catalogue for Horace Walpole's remarkable estate at Strawberry Hill. It includes a tour of the house itself in the introduction, followed by each of the days sales, including books, prints, coins and medals, pictures and drawings, enamels and miniatures, furniture, china, porcelain, and even stained glass (the sale went on for a staggering 24 days). A very good copy bound in contemporary dark red half calf, marbled boards. Gilt panelled spine, marbled edges and end-papers. Some quite large strips of the marbled paper, removed from the marbled boards, and extremities and corners rubbed. Contemporary book-plate of William Rix Beloe, and a biographical note dated 1842 relating to Walpole's death. [William Rix Beloe, Esq., son of the Rev. First edition, first issue, 4to, xxiv, 250 pp. Engraved title, portrait frontispiece, and 11 engravings in the text of the introduction, slightly later owner's name to the paste down. Later dark green half calf over contemporary marbled boards, light wear to the edges of the latter otherwise a very good copy. The auction included over 1,300 lots of books, 300 lots of coins and medals, and a wealth of other material, including bronzes, paintings, furniture and suits of armour, and a number of states of the catalogue exist; the later issues lacking the prints sections. At day 6, the text ends with lot 160 (lots 161-187 have been removed), there is an inserted announcement for the London sale of the books and prints from the Round Tower, and days 7 and 8 have been removed. George Robins, London, [ Hazen's fifth edition], 1842. Cloth-backed wrappers, small 4to, 27 cm,. xxiv, 250 pp, engraved title-page by Landells after a design by Delamotte. frontispiece portrait of Walpole lithographed by G.E. Madeley after a portrait by Eckhardt. Hazen identifies seven editions of this famous catalogue, of which this is Edition V : "The Waldegrave manuscripts (Sixth Day, lots 161-87) are removed; otherwise the lots are as in Edition IV. Some textual corrections on about two-thirds of the pages used to catalogue the books in the library. Edition V was the final revision of Days 7 and 8 before the books of prints were entirely recatalogued for the London sale. Red stamp on verso of the title-page "Suscipere et finire, ex Bibliotheca Ernesti Aug. Hannov. Regis" (the library of Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and King of Hanover (1771-1851). Madeley after Eckhardt; woodcut title, vignettes in the text; original cloth-backed blue pictorial wrappers creased and worn; spine ends chipped, good and sound. Tipped in at the front is a printed slip from W. Forster, "of No. 4 Lower James Street, Golden Square" who "begs leave to inform the Nobility and Gentry that, by the kind permission of Mr. George Robbins, he will attend at Strawberry Hill during the whole of the View and Sale, and will be happy to undertake the commissions of those who may be kind enough to favour him with their commands." Part of the preface is a description of Strawberry Hill by W. Harrison Ainsworth. At the end (p. 250) of the volume is an admission that this present edition carries inaccuracies, all of which will be rectified in the second edition.

George Robins, the auctioneer, advertised the sale to begin on April 25, 1842, and continue for 24 days. However, the original plan to sell some of the prints, drawings, and illustrated books in large lots was altered, so the contents originally proposed for the seventh and eight days of the sale were withdrawn, recatalogued in smaller lots, and sold later. As many as 7 editions of the catalog are known. This edition includes descriptions of contents through day 24, omitting days 7 and 8; the 6th day concludes with lot 160, omitting the Waldegrave manuscripts (originally lots 161- 187). It does not include the "Names of purchasers and the prices" sometimes found on 58 pages at the end.… Leer más
