Descripción:
Edinburgh: Printed for Archibald Constable & Co., 1805. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, 12mo, pp. viii, 532. Contemporary dark brown sheep, spine divided by gilt rules, red morocco label. Toned and foxed. Binding marked, rubbed and a little worn, small loss to head of spine. Title-page verso signed by the author to prove authenticity, various ink ownership inscriptions to endpapers. The verso of the title-page is printed: ‘The warranted correctness and established character of the Author’s Books, induce him to inform the Public, That no copy of any of them is genuine but what is signed by his own hand, as under’, followed by the author’s signature. This 1768 text was reprinted many times well into the 19th century, though this was likely the last edition signed by Thomson, who died in 1807. WorldCat and Library Hub cite only three copies of this edition at the BL, NLS, and University of Aberdeen.

Descripción:
Glasgow: Printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis, 1767. 8vo, pp. v, [iii], 95, [1]. Extracted from a bound volume. Some spotting, outer leaves a little soiled. A rare Foulis edition, the only printing they produced of this masque based on Fenelon's popular novel. George Graham (d. 1767) was an English writer, though with family connections to the Duke of Montrose which may explain how the London printing of his major work was followed not only by a Dublin reprint but this Scottish edition. The play received mixed reviews, though Samuel Johnson praised it, and it saw a musical adaptation. While the London first is reasonably widely held, this edition is located by ESTC in the BL and NLS only. ESTC T126027; Gaskell 466.

London: Printed for Bernard Lintott, 1715. 8vo, pp. 52, [4, ads] + frontispiece. Later blue paper wrappers. Somewhat spotted and soiled (especially half-title), margins of frontispiece and first three leaves repaired. The second edition, same year as the first, of Pope’s modernisation of Chaucer’s ‘House of Fame’. The major difference between the two editions is the advertisements at the end, which in the first edition are entirely for Urry’s edition of Chaucer, then in preparation, while in the second edition they are a general catalogue of Lintot’s publications (perhaps due to Urry’s death in March 1715; his Chaucer was thereby delayed until 1721). Descripción:
Glasgow: William Love, 1886. PRESENTATION COPY, 8vo, pp. viii, 146 + 8 plates. Contemporary green cloth. A little spotting. Boards lightly rubbed, soiled and ring-marked, a touch of rubbing to extremities. Presentation inscription to preserved initial (binder’s?) blank: ‘To Mr Donald with authors compliments March 10th, 1888 - Arch. McConnachie’, with clipped colour illustration of the title (from original binding?) pasted to verso, modern ink ownership signature to newer binder’s blank preceding, old bookplate of William Donald to pastedown. A pseudonymous anti-Catholic comic epistolary novel, which saw a series of reprints through the final quarter of the 19th century, all now fairly scarce. The earliest recorded edition in catalogues is the 1872 second edition, found by Worldcat at Glasgow, NLI and Queens University Belfast. That edition claims that the letters were first printed in the Paisley and Renfrewshire Gazette, which began publishing in 1864. This… Leer más

A Geneve [Geneva]: Chez Barrillot & Fils, 1747. 12mo, pp. xx, 239, [1]. Contemporary half sheep, sprinkled paper boards, tan label to spine. Some gatherings browned. Binding the merest touch rubbed at extremities. Armorial bookplate of H. Trouchin to front pastedown, along with small shelfmark label. An early edition of this small treatise on human pleasure and its moral purpose. First appearing as a shorter text based on correspondence with Lord Bolingbroke within an anthology in the 1730s, the author was convinced to expand upon it for proper publication the following decade, with the first authorised printing not long before this one. Louis-Jean Lévesque du Pouilly (1691-1750) was an early reader of Newton and hosted David Hume in Rheims.
