Text block is cracked in spots (no loose pages). The front and rear hinges are slightly cracked. This is a story involving the Cherokee Indians. Francis Robert Goulding, author, clergyman, inventor, lived in this house at the time of his death, August 22, 1881, and is buried in the Roswell Presbyterian Cemetery. The son of Rev. Thomas Goulding, founder and first president of the Presbyterian Theological Seminary at Columbia, S. C., Goulding was born near Midway Church in Liberty County, September 28, 1810. Pages 53 & 54 and pages 127 & 128 are not present however the continuity of the narrative is not missing. Another binders error? Light to moderate scattered foxing to contents. Previous owner inscription "Alexander Thayer Franklin Mass" written on the front blank end paper. Cloth lightly edge worn head of spine and on the corners.

Polished moroccan reddish brown leather hardcover. Raised bands, gilt decorations and leather title label on the spine. Gilt borders and gilt decorated board edges. Marbled end papers. All edges are marbled. This is most likely a presentation or gift binding to a student with gilt illustrated armorial seal and gilt lettered "Rugby School" on the front board. An illustrated label on the front paste down with Latin words and hand written name of A. C. Rowden at the top and another name at bottom (not legible) on the pasted down label. Also on the label is the hand written course "Humanities." Rubbed spots to the leather on the front cover. Light rubs to the leather joints and raised bands. Interior text in very good condition.

Leather rubbed along the board edges. Inscribed by the author on the first front blank end sheet. Previous owner signature of J. Ogden Murray's (upside down) on rear blank end sheet. J. Odgen Murray, author of the book "Immortal Six Hundred", was himself a captured Confederate Soldier. Shepherd was the youngest commissioned officer in the Confederate army. He was wounded and captured at Gettysburg in July 1863. He remained a prisoner until the end of the war. Nevins I page 202.

London: Wiley and Putnam, 1846. First English edition. Hardcover. Good. Octavo. iv, 5-324 pages. Illustrated with large folding map backed by linen, two frontispiece engravings, and two engraved plates in text. Green cloth hardcover ruled in blind on the covers with blind stamped eagle and shield illustration on the front cover. Gilt title and blind stamped decorations on the spine. Cloth lightly chipped head of the spine and edge worn base of the spine. Corners bumped. A few light repairs made to this copy including a front hinge repair and a tissue repair to the title page. A very small puncture on the title page. A few pages with very brief pencil notes or underlining. Light foxing to the blank verso of the linen backed map. Armorial bookplate of "Sir G. E. Hammond Bt. K.C.B." on the front paste down. A good copy. Howes 370 Notation for entry reads - "Eng. ed., with omissions and different pls 'a' Contains his first and second expeditions"; Reference Graff 1433 (Syracuse edition).
