The journey aboard the HMS Beagle lasted five years, from 1831 to 1836, and took Darwin to South America, Tahiti, the Galápagos Islands, and Australia. He contracted malaria (and was treated using various local remedies), was nearly stranded ashore in Montevideo, collected fossils, hunted kangaroo, and got thoroughly homesick (the trip had been planned to take just two years). London and New York: MacMillan and Co., 1893 Printed by R. and R. Clark, Edinburgh. Hard cover Crown 8vo., in original green publisher's trade cloth with pictorial gilt to front board and spine, 158 pp. No dust jacket. The satirical persona of landed country squire Sir Roger de Coverly was the invention of Addison and Steele, and premiered in The Spectator during 1711. Irish illustrator Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) is credited with the cover design of this volume as well as the fifty illustrations within. His delicate pen and ink style of illustration was particularly suited to the depiction of characters from the "Queen Ann Revival," which harkened back sentimentally to pre-industrial Britain. Condition: Very Good. Minor wear to corners. Spine somewhat cocked. Light scattered foxing within does not detract. Old ink gift inscription on ffep. dated 1893. Old bookseller's label (small) insufficiently removed from bottom corner of front pastedown. The pictorial bookplate of Dr. Ann Ridler (1935-2018) appears… Leer más

In-8,[12], 784, [20] pp. Hard cover, 8vo, (measuring 5 x 8 ¼ inches) in a contemporary full calf binding, panel stamped in blind and accented with a rolled gilt double border. The spine has five raised bands, double ruled in gilt, one compartment with the title, others stamped with a single gilt flower. Edges of the text block are decoratively spattered red. The boards of the binding are decorated in a cottage roof style, with inner and outer banding joined at the corners, the use of a rolled floral ornament parallel to the inner lined border and four fleurons at the outer corners. The engraved title page features an image of Erasmus and three scholars inspecting a globe-- likely a play on the printer/publishers' identity: the family of Joan and Cornelius Blaeu with family roots and fame in the making of globes, maps and atlases. The Blaeus were the official mapmakers to the Dutch East India Trading Company. The editor, Cornelius… Leer más
