Later 19th century marbled paper wrappers; some minor foxing. Treatise on Arabic writing forms and grammar based on manuscripts in the Royal Library in Naples written by Maurizio Lettieri (1804-1849) a professor of Arabic at the University of Naples. The essay describes fourteen Arabic manuscripts and provides bibliographic and textual information on each, including examples of the script used by the scribes recording the text. The Arabic text is often accompanied by the Latin equivalents, providing access to both the script and the contents of each manuscript. The folding plate shows examples of various manuscript alphabets and numbers, and it includes specimens of type made to represent the scripts. Not cited in ICCU the Italian Union Catalogue. An unusual survival of this publishers subscription prospectus for a seven volume work, by Regius Professor Isidoro Bianchi, that collects his monographs from journals and other publications on all subjects, from the fine arts, education, economics, science, epigraphy, and antiquarian studies.  The work is unusual in that all his writings are cited with their first place of publication and date.  Subscriptions of 50 soldi of Milanese money are solicited for which subscribers will receive a free copy.  This prospectus was written by Bianchi's contemporary :Lorenzo Manini, a reformer himself and correspondent of Benjamin Franklin. Bound in green publisher's cloth, title in gilt on upper board, paper label on spine with title in ink. Very good copy, with a few notes in pencil in the margins. Only edition. Attractive copy of this practical manual to the science and art of horse shoeing and care for horses. With chapters on the damage ("evils") done to horse by poor shoeing practices, a description of the "goodenough horse shoe" and its benefits to the common horse, and a short description of the anatomy of the horse hoof. The illustrations provide detail to the methods described by the author.

New York: Printed by Alexander Ming, Jr., 1828. 8vo.  215 x 140 mm., [8 ½ x 5 ½ inches].  16 pp.  Stitched as issued in original printed wrappers; wrappers chipped at spine and a bit soiled.  Stamp of the New York State Library on wrapper and marked withdrawn on lower wrapper.  With faults a good copy. Small 8vo.  185 x 117 mm., [7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches].  77, [1] pp.  Wood engraved frontispiece.  Original green publisher's cloth; head and tail of spine frayed, joints rubbed with some wear, paper label worn away.  Book plate rubbed away.  With faults a sound, clean copy.Second edition, originally appearing in 1842.  This edition "Printed by Private Subscription."Satirical poem, written by a member of the Harvard student body, commemorating an epic food fight between the freshman and sophomore classes at the College.  The poem is illustrated with a playful design of a witch, female custodian, with broom and bucket, playing a fiddle as she flies through the air.  The design is by J. Folio.  305 x 190 mm., [2 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches].  Manuscript in ink.  39 pp. Contemporary calf backed boards; war to paper covers and spine.  Text block with some browning and staining.  Legible. Record book of the  minutes from the quarterly conferences of the Methodist Circuit of Warrior's Mark, Pennsylvania. The notes record the officers of the conference, which include a president and a secretary. It seems that the post of conference president was always filled by a senior reverend of the circuit, while the secretary regularly rotated among the membership.  Each meeting began by addressing the following items of business: Objections or complaints to recent business of the circuit: Appeals to decisions made at the last quarterly conference:  Applications or renewals of licenses to preach: and Report on the nine schools maintained by the court circuit. Early collected edition of essays and novels by the French author and daughter of the Jacques Necker, banker and French economic minister to Louis XVI. Madame de Stael's (1766-1817) was one of the most influential literary voices of her time and her publications were sought after by readers from all over Europe who were interested in understanding events during the French Revolution and the reign of Napoleon I. A critic of Napoleon's rise to absolute power, she was banned from Paris in 1802 and in 1805, after his anointment as emperor, Napoleon renewed the ban against her presence in the city. The report for 1851 provides details on short description of educational programs and a detailed accounting of school expenses including a folding table that shows cost comparisons with all the major cities of the East and Middle West.

Bound in contemporary pebbled morocco spine and tips over marbled paper boards; edges rubbed, but a sound and attractive copy. First illustrated edition; the text was published in an abbreviated form in 1869. This report was initiated by an outbreak of disease in a large number of Texas cattle that had been shipped north and landed in Cairo, Illinois. The disease quickly spread, and a government response was requested through the House of Representatives. A team lead by the English Professor of Veterinary Medicine James Gamgee and the botanists H. W. Ravenel of South Carolina traveled to Texas to find the origins of the diseased live stock. Folio.  325 x 210 mm., [13 ¼ x 8 ½ inches].  Manuscript in ink. 373 pp.  Full contemporary calf, raised bands, tilt spine and borders.  Very legible in a very sound binding.  This ledger contains a remarkably complete record of correspondence relating to the insurance firm of Thatcher and Fearing. Recorded upon its pages are hundreds of letters copied from originals written by and addressed to members of the firm. The firm appears to have insured a number of small businesses from Maine to Ohio. The firm, which consisted of David Thatcher, Peter Thatcher, and Andrew Fearing, was based in Boston, and is cited in the Boston city directories printed in the 1850s. The firm appears to have dealt heavily in risk insurance, evidenced by a number of letters written to small business owners indicating that the firm would reimburse various financial losses.  Many letters, written to the most prominent men in Boston society,  also deal with cases in which the firm had difficulty… Leer más

"This reprint is dedicated to the Admirers of Mr. J. Payne Collier, in the United States, by C. W. The author of  "An Inquiry" was  Nicholas Hamilton, member of the Manuscript Department of the British Museum working under the direction of Sir Frederic Madden, Keeper of the Collection.  His analysis of the annotations and manuscript notes in the so-called Perkins Folio of Shakespeare's Works (1632), concluded they were forgeries of a modern date.  J. Folio sheet folded into quarters after writing; small tears at folds, expertly repaired, light tide marks and some soiling to the paper stock. Likely the student essay of Dr. Charles Henry Strong (1828-1912) who was from Girard, Erie, Pennsylvania. At age sixteen he attended the academy at Springfield, Pennsylvania and to years later he entered college at Girard, from which he was graduated in two years. Upon graduation Strong taught school in both Erie and Crawford County Pennsylvania for eight years. Strong eventually graduated (in 1858) from Cleveland Eclectic Medical College and spent the remainder of his career in medical practice in Sangamon County, Illinois. First edition.  A blurb on the front cover reads in part:  "Can you really claim to be skilled housewives? Are you sure that the lunches you prepare are always appetizing and varied? An invaluable guide will help you create the pleasure of the table in your home!"  Much of the text is a narrative of how to prepare a menu, choose ingredients, and cook delicious food for the family.  Nico Ferrini could be the son of the more famous Italian cookery writer, Lina Ferrini who published a number of important recipe books before the WWII. A few minor tears to the margins, expertly repair, some light foxing and discoloration. A very stable and flexible paper stock. Rare portrait of the military hero from Kentucky, (thought to be the killer of Tecumseh), close associate of Henry Clay, Member of both Houses of Congress and finally the Vice President of the United States. The portrait was made while Johnson was Vice President and it captures the sense of the man and the knowing look he casts on the viewer. It is very beautifully executed by the artist and is a display of the artists skill and sense of humanity. Not much can be gleaned about the life and career of Charles Fenderich, who worked in Washington D. Illustrated with 32 color postcards, linked together in accordian fashion and bound in boards, decorated with a view of ancient Pompei and Blessed Virgin Mary. High gloss tourists cards printed in color, each with an legend describing the image in Italian, French, English and German.  Nice survival in quite good condition.

Steel engraving by James Smillie after a painting by Albert Bierstadt that was completed in 1863.  Signed in Pencil by both Bierstadt and Smillie. A few brown spots removed by expert paper conservator.  Excellent condition.      "This painting is the major work that resulted from the artist's first trip to the West. His intention to create panoramic views of the American frontier was apparent by December 1858, just before he embarked on the trip. In early 1859 he accompanied a government survey expedition, headed by Frederick W. Lander, to the Nebraska Territory. By summer, the party had reached the Wind River Range of the Rocky Mountains in what is now Wyoming. Bierstadt dubbed the central mountain in the picture Lander's Peak following the colonel's death in the Civil War.
