Partial cracks to outer hinges but inner hinges intact and binding firm. Corners bumped and a little torn. Binding reasonably firm though strained in the off place and front and rear inner hinges are cracked. Page edges speckled and a bit browned. Patterned endpapers. No dust jacket. Dark blue cloth boards and spine, with marking and scuffing, plus a tear to the upper spine. Title on spine faded. Binding holding but strained in several places. Corners bumped and a little torn. Some browning and a little tanning to page edges. Information sheet about the author (possibly part of the original dust jacket) taped onto FFEP. Page surfaces generally clean but some pages contain pencil marks, underlining and marginalia. See pictures for further information.

In very good condition for age. Pictorial and patterned boards. Split to top third of outer front hinge. Gilt lettering to front board and spine. Slight wear and rubbing but colour, design and gilt detail very vivid. Removable protective clear plastic cover. Some signs of shelf-wear. Book has slight forward tilt. Corners bumped and rubbed. Binding firm. Page edges browned but reasonably clean. Small seller stamp to FFEP and bookplate from 1898 for school prizegiving to front pastedown. Slight marking to endpapers but otherwise page surfaces are very clean, only the occasional mark, no underlining, marginalia, etc. See pictures for further information.

Tear along length of outer rear hinge, a little tearing to front outer hinge but spine still attached there, with a little tearing at head and tail of spine also and some creasing. Other signs of wear, rubbing at edges and on hinges, bumped and slightly torn corners. Book has a forward tilt. Binding slack but contents reasonably firm. Page edges browned, scuffed and marked. Some minor foxing to pastedowns and endpapers, occasional foxing throughout. Red lettering to front free endpaper - uncertain of this was printed or if it was stenciled by a previous owner. Hinges intact and binding holding but quite strained in places. Page edges browned and a bit marked. Corners bumped and a little torn. Binding holding although crack to front inner hinge and FFEP a bit loose. Page edges browned and some are a little uneven. Previous owner name written in pencil on inside of FFEP. Otherwise page surfaces are free of any underlining, marginalia, etc. though there are odd marks here and there. Some slackness to binding, a little strain, cracked front inner hinge with mesh exposed but otherwise holding quite well. Page edges browned, foxed, marked and scuffed. A nice set, richly illustrated and informative about various religious, scientific and philosophical matters.
Each volume measures 10" by 7.5". Patterned cloth boards. Gilt lettering to spines. Boards and spines are scuffed and marked, spines especially, which are also a bit discoloured but overall binding has retained much of its colouring. Signs of rubbing and shelf-wear, especially to spines. Some tearing to tops of spines of volumes 2 and 3, whilst volume 1 is split along the outer rear hinge. Other hinges, outer and inner, intact. Corners bumped and a little worn. Binding firm. Page edges a little browned but reasonably clean. Some pencil underlining and marginalia, etc. throughout. See pictures for further information.
