Bound in full vellum, with text printed in red and black, with 6- and 10-line bordered initials printed in red mimicking the Kelmscott Press style. Very good in marbled paper boards with paper spine and cover labels; in partial glassine wrapper and good blue box with paper title label but with wear and one corner torn.. First edition thus, limited to 500 copies. A facsimile of Richardson's popular 1769 work, this was Newton's Christmas greeting sent to friends and associates in 1929. 16mo. xv, [14], 166pp. Fleck 88.

Bretherton's wife to the wife of Kenneth Grahame on the flyleaf. Bretherton was a frequent contributor to Punch magazine and an enthusiastic support of Grahame. Poems was published after the death of both Bretherton and Grahame, hence the inscription to/from their respective spouses.

About very good in publisher's dark red cloth with bumping and wear to edges and spine, paper spine label present but with loss, spine lean, front hinge starting, but nevertheless a desirable copy with excellent association.. Inscribed presentation copy from Morris to Ford Madox Brown, dated December 1888. An exceptional Pre-Raphaelite association. Brown was a British painter closely aligned with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, an "old and intimate" friend of Morris, and a founding partner of Morris's design company, Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. This copy was also owned by, and has the bookplate and ownership inscription of, American painter and collector Hamilton Easter Field who appears to have acquired it in 1894, the year after Brown's death. 8vo. Unbound sheets. 93pp., [1] + tissued-guarded engraved frontispiece. OCLC reflects one physical copy in the United States, and none appear to be the instant vellum issue.

The large folding map is present.. First Edition of the important work on prison reform. This work most famously contains a lengthy attack on the views of prisons expressed by Charles Dickens. Adshead argued, influentially, that what Dickens had written in his American Notes (1842) on the "Pennsylvania [prison] system" was fiction, and could not be taken seriously as commentary. Dickens scholar Phillip Collins even notes that Adshead criticism constituted "the basis for most of the subsequent attacks on American Notes during Dickens's lifetime". With fifty woodcuts by John Bewick, younger brother of Thomas Bewick, which are of course moralizing but also humorous, as to be relatable to the intended, youthful audience. Very good in contemporary half-leather over marbled boards, top edge gilt, a bit rubbed with some wear to upper joint, discrete nineteenth-century library stamp to pastedown.

First edition (BAL 4270, binding variant A). ALS pasted on rear pastedown to a D.W. Fiske (possibly a fellow Cornell professor elected to professorship in the same year as Curtis). A desirable copy given the provenance.
