The third novel by this underappreciated author, who will probably always be best-known for her first book, "Whistle Stop" (1941), but who achieved a little posthumous boost in her reputation when, following her death in 2002, the manuscript for an unpublished novel was discovered in her refrigerator, where she'd kept it for thirty years. (This book, "Sudden Rain," was published in 2005.) [nice-looking book, gilt lettering on spine and front cover bright as new, slight bumping to bottom corners, shallow dent at edge of rear cover, light soiling to fore-edge; jacket a bit tattered, tears/chips at all corners, about one inch paper loss to base of spine]. The author undertakes in this book to address the "most serious maladjustment between life and religion" that he feels to be manifest in American Judaism. As the jacket blurb states: "Even the professing Orthodox Jew must admit that between the demands of religion and the call of modern American life the chasm is widening daily." [nice clean book with no discernible wear, but with a previous owner's name plus date & place of purchase written in ink at the top of the front endpaper; the jacket is flawless]. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson meet Tarzan in this imaginative pastiche, set during World War I. When the duo undertake a perilous mission to British East Africa to recover a deadly secret formula that's been stolen from the Allies, and are captured by and then escape from the Germans, and then get lost, it's Lord Greystoke who comes to their rescue. .

[ex-school library book, heavy wear to bottom edge, front hinge cracked and crudely repaired, labels and pockets on front endpapers, etc.; the jacket, however, is fairly presentable, with just a bit of paper loss at the extremities, and a corner torn away at the bottom of the rear flap (taking a little bit of text with it)]. (pen and ink drawings) Juvenile adventure set in the jungles of the Amazon headwaters. One of a series of "boys in exotic locales" tales by this author ("Wu Han of Korea," "Pancho of Peru," etc.). The book's a bit of a mess, as noted, but the jacket would transfer well to a better copy, if you happen to have one and aren't opposed to remarriage. .

Screenplay Series) Series Trade PB (B&W photographs) Typically excellent entry in this screenplay series, with an erudite introduction by noted scholar Rudy Behlmer, containing not only copious details about this production, but background on the Robin Hood legend and a brief discussion of other film treatments of same -- a topic about which, it should be noted, Mr. Behlmer was extremely knowledgeable. This, of course, is (as far as I'm concerned) the definitive Robin Hood movie, with Errol Flynn and a perfect supporting cast, one of the great movie scores (by Erich Wolfgang Korngold), and enough terrific moments, visual and verbal, for half-a-dozen movies. "Hawke was a thoroughly bad hombre; he killed, staged hold-ups, rustled horses, and ran crooked gambling joints. But he never double-crossed a friend, a partner, or even a 'sucker' who trusted him, and to abuse a woman or a child was to invite his swift and devastating rage." A prolific pulp writer with hundreds of published stories to her credit, the author worked mostly in the Western genre, but also contributed to "Weird Stories" and wrote a handful of mystery/detective novels in the 1940s and 1950s. .
