Contains 3 loose leaves, folded (once) into 12 pages; plates #1-15 (in full-color and b/w); and an original etching. Inscribed by the artist on the half-title page: "Pour Monsieur et Madame Harold Weill, en hommage de tres cordiale sympathie / A. Dunoyer de Segonzac / Janvier 1965." (Weill was a prominent lawyer and philanthropist in Manhattan.) Number 116 from a limited edition of 1000 copies. Portfolio and jacket quite worn, with chipping along spine, edges, and at corners. Aside from a small closed tear at the bottom of plate #7, contents are bright and clean, suitable for display. An incomplete set, but scarce signed.

Water-damaged, with slight wrinkle to the text, but significant staining and wrinkling to the plates (a few of which are scuffed or stuck together). Certainly not a pretty copy, but a very scarce item, OCLC locates only 3 copies worldwide. Includes Beringoff, Iuon, Joganson, Katzmann, Kotoff, Malaieff, Modoroff, and others.

Stab binding, bound with grey ribbon, patterned cloth over boards (13” x 9.25”) with handwritten titles on front board; contains 19 grey heavy cardstock leaves, each featuring numerous b/w photographs (more than 150 in all, average size is 3” x 4.25”) affixed to rectos and versos with photo-corners, most of them labeled by hand, in German (with some English). Boards a little rubbed and scuffed, else fine. A lovely young African woman, wearing robes, a turban, and a necklace, clutches a pipe in her teeth and poses for the camera in front of a thatched roof house. The photograph bears the handwritten label, “Basutofrau aus dem Hinterland von East London.” So begins this collection of images – photographs taken by the author, and postcards – of Cape Town and South-West Africa in 1931. Boston: Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1859. Hardcover. Very Good. Large paper copy of this 19th century American classic. The Arthur Swann copy with his bookplate. Housed in a custom folding case. Cloth is unusually bright. All edges gilt. It is hard not to described this copy as fine, but the front hinge is creaking a bit. Aside from that, difficult to imagine a nicer copy.

Wien: Sebastian Hartl, 1785. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good . 12mo. 79 pp. Contemporary half leather, spine gilt; red label. Binding a bit rubbed, but nevertheless a charming period binding with decorative floral endpapers. Rare first edition of this work by the German Jewish philosopher, Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786). It was next published in Berlin in 1796.

Paris: Lavigne, 1830. Hardcover. Very Good+. N.d., but early-1800s. Prize binding, "Institution de Mme. d'Aubree" stamped in gilt on upper board. Full green calf, gilt-stamped border, details, and lettering on boards and spine. Illustrated with numerous woodcuts throughout. Spine a little sunned; boards rubbed; light scuffing at spine tips, joints, and corners. A pretty copy, with bookplate of the institution on front paste-down.

Tours: A.D. Mame, 1839. Hardcover. Very Good. Marbled boards, backed in red leather with gilt-stamped lettering. Illustrated with woodcuts throughout. Bookplate of Walvisch-Vangst, G. J. Honig, Zaandijk facing the half-title page. Chipping in the paper and leather at extremities; plate IV detached, laid-in. An excellent working copy.

Nüremberg: n.p., 1812. Hardcover. Very Good. Volume 5 (of 6), 8vo (195 x 116mm). [6], 244pp. 17 full-page copper engraved plates, each plate with two scenes, all hand-colored. Period calf backing pastepaper boards, morocco lettering piece. Interesting German 19th century book of costumes, habitation and manners in the Middle East, Northern Europe and Africa; complete with the original 17 hand-colored plates. This multi- national study included depictions of dress of men and women who were Scottish, Greek, Japanese, Thai, Chinese, Patagonian, Russian, Hindu, Siberian, Algerian, and Tibetan, among more. A detailed description for each plate is in the text with observations for the traversed area. Interest for observation of the Oriental lands produced much travel literature in the 19th century. All full-page hand-colored costume and scenic plates are beautifully preserved in fresh colors and impressions.

Cape Town: R. Beerman Publishers, n.d.. Hardcover. Good/Good. Cloth, in illustrated dust jacket, both a bit water-damaged, though the text block remains nice. A good reading copy, with an interesting provenance: From the library of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., with his bookplate on the front paste-down, and inscribed to him by the author. Fairbanks (1909-2000) was an iconic American actor from Hollywood’s Golden Era (his credits include “Gunga Din”), and a highly decorated naval officer of World War II.

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Lovely copy with publisher's review slip laid in. Stamped "From the Library of Truman Capote" in blue ink at the front. From the library of Truman Capote (auctioned off in parts in New York at Bonhams on November 9, 2006). Following Capote's death in 1984, many of Capote's belongings, including his library, were passed on to his dear friend Joanne Carson (wife of Johnny Carson). She became "the loving custodian of these treasures" for several decades until they were dispersed by Bonham's. A nice opportunity to acquire a book from the library of one of America's most colorful and controversial authors. This particular book is a nice association considering what Rorem has to say about Capote in the book. He writes: "All that Truman touches turns to fool's gold."
