c. 1950. Cloth-covered boards, in a hand-made dust jacket with sewn flaps (creates a nice folder, or pocket, on the interior) and “BOATSWAIN” handwritten on front cover; 9 x 15 inches. Approx. pp. 300, with handwritten notes and drawings, as well as tipped-on dittos, photocopies, and pamphlets. Mid- to late-1950s. All the details and duties of the Boatswain – from steel-wire rope and deck cranes to fire precautions, anchoring, and towage – carefully recorded in ink by one hand throughout, with the occasional tipped- or laid-in supplement. Also includes hand-drawn and colored diagrams, illustrations, and tables. Only about half of the pages are left blank. The rest are exceptionally clear, tidy, legible, and organized, with nary a scratch-out, doodle, or aside to be found! A few spots of soiling on dust jacket, a few pages wrinkled from the adhesive, but otherwise tight and clean.

New York: Brentanos, 1891. Hardcover. Very Good. The Baby's Biography. A keepsake album with text and arrangement by A. O. Kaplan. Illustrations by Frances Brundage. New York: Brentanos, 1891. This unique example contains the record of infancy and childhood of one Mary Crane, resident of Michigan, in handwritten entries throughout, as well as a number of mementos and bits of ephemera. On the first page for an entry, titled at the top, "Welcome Little Stranger," we learn that she was born on Friday, the third day of August, 1888. A tiny envelope pasted at the bottom of this leaf contains the birth announcement, recording that Mary weighed in at 7.5 lbs. Further in, there are numerous little treasures: a first pair of homemade slippers, holiday cards to her mother, impressive locks of hair, original bits of art, and eventually, at the very back, an essay on Cicero. An unusually rich album, with lots of fun bits; the whole amounts to an interesting picture of late 19th-century American life.

San Antonio, Texas: Cocke Company, 1908. Hardcover. Good. Blue cloth, gilt-stamped lettering on upper board and spine, all edges marbled. Illustrated. Both volumes: Boards scuffed, lightly soiled, and water-damaged. An excellent working set or candidate for repair, with clean text block.

Moscow: Grosman & Knebel, 1899. Hardcover. Very Good+/Good+. Original gilt-stamped pictorial brown cloth; printed dust jacket; 4to; pp. 112, illustrated throughout. Some light scuffing at spine tips and corners; front hinge cracked; discreet contemporary ownership markings on verso of FFEP, and top margin or title-page, but overall internally nice and clean. Dust jacket wrinkled and torn along the edges; large chip at head of spine; foxed; but presents nicely in mylar, and certainly uncommon.

New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., 1928. First Edition thus. Hardcover. Very Good+/Good. Original cloth-backed boards gilt; dust jacket. ILLUSTRATED BY JOHN VASSOS and by him on the half-title. DJ is chipped along the edges and has a chip missing from the center of the spine. In mylar protective wrapper to minimize further damage.

The author's second book. Briefly inscribed and signed by Norman Mailer. Typical rubbing to black Rinehart boards, but a nice square copy in a DJ (retaining the original price of $3.00) with light edgewear externally; there is some staining to the verso of the green and black variant dustwrapper, especially to the spine. But this is hardly visible without turning the jacket over. Displays quite nicely in mylar.

Amsterdam: Ex Officina Elzeviriana, 1659. Hardcover. Near Fine. 18mo; pp. 569 + index. Text in Latin. Handsome contemporary red morocco, heavily gilt. Leaf of later manuscript notes in French tipped in before title. There were many editions of this political romance printed in a number of European countries. Last leaf of index with an ink stain at the top continuing to endpapers, but this is still a very nice copy in a beautiful binding.

Stockholm: A. Wiborg for H. A. Nordström, 1827. Hardcover. Very Good+. Remboitage of late-18th or early-19th century tree calf, ornately gilt-stamped on boards and spine; pp. [4], vi, [2], 102, [2], including engraved title and dedication; 20 engraved plates by Jakob Gillberg. Spine tips and corners lightly scuffed; endpapers renewed; text leaves browned, but plates clean. Later edition of an alphabet book dedicated to the Crown Prince of Sweden, originally published in 1780 and patterned on the 1772 Neues A.B.C. Buch of Christian Felix Weisse.
