A prize dissertation proposing spelling reform into 30 letters to represent English, the enduring legacy of this article is in the related essay at the rear on teaching deaf people to speak. This essay suggests different strategies depending on the age of the learner: just as in acquiring foreign languages, children have more practical facility than adults. But for older students, learning in conjunction with reading is important - though greatly complicated by the lack of standardized spelling (a problem that inspired the main portion of this pamphlet, and also tackled by Webster in this era). Jack London's animal fiction has captured the hearts and imaginations of generations of Americans. A socialist, animal activist, and eugenicist, London was a complex man who participated in unemployment protests and the Alaskan Gold Rush. New York: Donahue, 1916. Very good plus.. A short story of the Campfire Girls, a popular fiction series from the early 20th century based upon a girls' club very similar to the Girl Scouts. Officially incorporated as a national organization in 1912, the Camp Fire Girls was a youth development program meant to teach girls the skills of outdoors self-sufficiency. It was a nonsectarian group that still exists today as a gender inclusive organization. In its early years, the org took a problematic approach to camping, dressing white girls in approximations of traditional clothing of Indigenous nations, including "playing" various tribes. The Art Nouveau-influenced images of this publication capture the cheerful appropriation of those years of the program. A nice copy, much scarcer than the books in the series. Folio. Beautifully bound 1920s edition of Shaw's play that pits an idealist poet against a practical cleric for a woman's affections - in attractive Art Deco fine binding. The second of Shaw's "Plays Pleasant" trilogy, CANDIDA was first published in 1898. The play did not prove to be particularly popular in London, but found more fertile ground in New York in 1904, with Shaw himself remarking on the "Candidamania" that swept the city. The play saw a revival in 1924, which again captivated audiences, and was still running when this edition of the play was published. The unsigned binding of this copy exhibits a strong and prescient design sensibility: the motif embodies the Art Deco style of the late '20s, but would also not look out of place on a 21st century fine binding.
