Descripción:
Philadelphia: American Book and Bible House, 1902. Good only, lacking several leaves and plates.. First edition of this attractive how-to book for girls, featuring extensive descriptions of various crafts and even magic tricks to play with friends. DAINTY WORK FOR DAINTY PEOPLE, like many craft books even today, is aimed at girls and women; embroidery, lacemaking, knitting, and crocheting are all described in easy-to-follow terms, and a section on educational and amusing activities is also included. But handmade crafts were, and continue to be, more than simple pastimes: historian Clive Edwards notes that the gendering of crafts "led to the distinction between amateur women and professional men," further calling attention to the idea of encouraging women to "use their 'spare' time productively" (11-12). This title is an interesting example of the development of DIY culture. 9.5'' x 7''. Original green pictorial cloth binding. Illustrated with several full-page color plates and numerous…

Descripción:
London: Printed for J. Coxhead, 1816. Very good plus.. Regency-era edition of these richly hand-colored engravings by one of the finest imitators of Holbein, in a handsome contemporary binding. Holbein's Dance of Death, designed in the 1520s and first printed from Lutzelberger's woodblocks in 1538, enjoyed decades of sustained popularity among the morbid Protestants of northern Europe, with the theme's popularity only increasing as waves of imitators produced their own editions and copies. Hollar (1607-1677) produced a particularly skillful version; his series of 30 etchings was initially published in 1651 with decorative borders by Abraham Diepenbeeck; the editions of 1780 and following were printed without the borders and with explanatory text. This London edition of 1816 issued the plates in a fourth state, reworked "with the utmost attention to the preservation of their original spirit and character" (Douce) and exquisitely colored by hand. With a Life of Holbein, two essays, and descriptive…

Paris: Domino Press, 1931. First edition. Very good plus.. First printing of a pivotal book in Rojankovsky's career, his first in English, and the first book published by the Domino Press, founded in Paris by American expats Esther Averill and Lila Stanley. Averill initially met Rojankovsky for a different design project, but when that fell through Rojankovsky suggested a children's book collaboration. Inspired in part by Rojankovsky's childhood love of James Fenimoore Cooper books, DANIEL BOONE was meant to be a lavish vision of the American West - but for that reason, American publishers considered it too expensive to print. Averill's response was to found the Domino Press in order to make the book a reality. Published in both French and English, this copy is the English issue. The book's success is credited in part with revitalizing the French children's book market, and played a role in Rojankovsky landing work in the famous Père Castor series. 14.5'' x 11.5''. Descripción:
London: William Pickering, 1846. Very good.. First edition of one of the earliest collections of Andersen's fairy tales translated into English. About a decade after Andersen's first children's stories in Danish, the English-speaking world was finally introduced to them via five different collections published in 1846: WONDERFUL STORIES FOR CHILDREN (February), A DANISH STORY-BOOK (February), this collection (May), THE NIGHTINGALE (June), and THE SHOES OF FORTUNE (December). Included here are the first appearances in English of "The Emperor's New Clothes," "The Nightingale," "The Wild Swans," and more, translated by Caroline Peachey, whose work proved the most popular of the three Andersen translators from 1846. Historian Jack Zipes suggests the translations of Andersen's stories were a turning point for the English fairy tale; they "guaranteed the legitimacy of the literary fairy tale for middle-class audiences. From this point on, the fairy tale flowered in many different forms and colors and…
