First edition of this attractive how-to book for girls, featuring extensive descriptions of various crafts and even magic tricks to play with friends. DAINTY WORK FOR DAINTY PEOPLE, like many craft books even today, is aimed at girls and women; embroidery, lacemaking, knitting, and crocheting are all described in easy-to-follow terms, and a section on educational and amusing activities is also included. But handmade crafts were, and continue to be, more than simple pastimes: historian Clive Edwards notes that the gendering of crafts "led to the distinction between amateur women and professional men," further calling attention to the idea of encouraging women to "use their 'spare' time productively" (11-12). Holbein's Dance of Death, designed in the 1520s and first printed from Lutzelberger's woodblocks in 1538, enjoyed decades of sustained popularity among the morbid Protestants of northern Europe, with the theme's popularity only increasing as waves of imitators produced their own editions and copies. Hollar (1607-1677) produced a particularly skillful version; his series of 30 etchings was initially published in 1651 with decorative borders by Abraham Diepenbeeck; the editions of 1780 and following were printed without the borders and with explanatory text. This London edition of 1816 issued the plates in a fourth state, reworked "with the utmost attention to the preservation of their original spirit and character" (Douce) and exquisitely colored by hand. Not only were Barnes and Denby two of the most prominent dance critics at the time - indeed Barnes described Denby as "our finest dance critic" - but Barnes reviewed this very book for the New York Times, describing DANCERS, BUILDINGS AND PEOPLE IN THE STREETS as: "Witty, irrevant, and sharp, yet gentle [...] a dance book in a hundred." First printing of a pivotal book in Rojankovsky's career, his first in English, and the first book published by the Domino Press, founded in Paris by American expats Esther Averill and Lila Stanley. Averill initially met Rojankovsky for a different design project, but when that fell through Rojankovsky suggested a children's book collaboration. Inspired in part by Rojankovsky's childhood love of James Fenimoore Cooper books, DANIEL BOONE was meant to be a lavish vision of the American West - but for that reason, American publishers considered it too expensive to print. Averill's response was to found the Domino Press in order to make the book a reality. Published in both French and English, this copy is the English issue.
