Philadelphia, 1805. 61pp. plus [1]p. of errata. Modern marbled wrappers. Old ink pagination numbers on upper corner of recto of leaves, from its previous position in a sammelband. Contemporary manuscript note on titlepage attributing authorship to Turner Camac. Very good. Lacks the map. One of the earliest American works entirely devoted to canals. The author strongly advocates the advancement of navigable communication between the states in the Northeast, South, and Midwest, with emphasis on Pennsylvania, but citing New York, Virginia, Louisiana, Ohio, etc. He lists the advantages for trade in manufactured and agricultural goods. Howes notes that this work is also ascribed to Turner Camac, and the NUC says it was "principally extracted" from Camac's INLAND NAVIGATION IN IRELAND and adapted by William Blodgett for American waterways. [Lynchburg, Va.: J.P. Bell Company Incorporated, ca. 1910].. 44pp. including illustrations, plus two postcards. Oblong octavo. Original pictorial wrappers, stapled. Minor wear. Near fine. A rare promotional booklet for Marion County, Florida around the turn of the 20th century, primarily focused on attracting farmers. The county's slogan, "Good as the Best for Fruit and Vegetables/ Better than the Rest for 'Hog and Hominy'", adorns the first page. The final page drives home the point, stressing that "This county contains good land within its boundaries....Her resources are unlimited; the industrious farmer can succeed." The pamphlet itself is mostly made up of photographic illustrations, with occasional text about the climate, schools, and other amenities in the region. The illustrations show homes, farms, street scenes, flora, golf clubs and other recreations, and more. Boards rubbed and edgeworn, two x two inch triangular-shaped portion of calf missing from front board. Early ownership inscription on front free endpaper. Text tanned and foxed. Good. "First American from the second London edition." Effectively three books in one, the first is an examination of puerperal fever, a devastating infection that affected women within days of childbirth, and was a common cause of death in childbirth up to the 1930s. The second book focuses on scarlet fever, pulmonary consumption, and measles, three common but deadly illnesses of the time, as well as discussing the positive effects of sulphurus water in healing them. The final book examines copaiba (copaiva in the book) balsam, a medecine made from sap of the copaifera species of trees. In 1838, Missouri governor Lilburn Boggs ordered: "The Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State, if necessary." The author, John Portineus Greene (a brother-in-law of Brigham Young), was appointed to gather documentary evidence of the ensuing repression, some of which he witnessed personally, and which he published circa July 1839. "This gives the story of the expulsion from the Mormon point of view. The expulsion created such a wave of condemnation against the Governor and authorities of the state of Missouri that two years later the General Assembly of the state published DOCUMENT CONTAINING THE CORRESPONDENCE, ORDERS, &c. Ehrenberg emigrated from Germany to New Orleans, and joined the Louisiana Greys to fight in aid of Texas in 1835. He took part in the siege of Bexar, the battle of Coleto in March 1836, and the Fannin massacre, from which he escaped. Later he took part in the Gold Rush and the early settlement of California. He was pastor of the North Church in Boston when he delivered this sermon, which is based on 2 Samuel 1:25, "How the mighty have fallen."
