Early leather binding of half dark blue morocco. Spine, which has been re-laid, ruled lettered and decorated in gilt. Double gilt ruled lines on the morocco edges bordering blue cloth panels on the boards. Marbled endpapers with a strip of plain paper to both inner hinges where the book has been professionally re-cased. Top edge gilt. Some rubbing to the edges of the binding. A beautifully produced edition in the arts and crafts style of the period, in a skilfully repaired but very good quality and still attractive early leather binding.

1821, London, first edition in English. Modern fine binding of half leather and marbled boards by Starr Bookworks. An underappreciated volume likely due to this first English translation. The modern translator, Seeber, describes this translation as the "product of a prosaic and incompetent literary hack" (please tell us how you really feel). It also omits about 40% of the original work leaving out daily interactions with Americans, Native Americans, and the most colorful events. Condition is Very Good: modern fine binding is excellent. Interior has scattered foxing and toning, no writing or old ownership marks. Marginal pencil mark on final page. Frontis edge conserved. Paginates: frontis, [2], 102, 5 plates, modern blanks. Six plates total. Other engravings in text. The Mammoth Skeleton plate is a modern copy. The frontis is a fairly spectacular aquatint of New York harbor. Copies with color plates are uncommon. Portrait frontis engravings showing Browning as a young man (dated 1835) opposite the title page of volume 1, and as an old man (1881) for volume 2. Finely bound in contemporary full burgundy calf bindings. Spines with raised bands, each with gilt ruling. Compartments with double ruled and decorated in gilt. Twin tan morocco labels, gilt. Boards with double ruled borders with floral decorations to the corners. Front boards both have circular gilt stamp of Saint Catherine's School, Bramley, Guildford, to the centre. Decorative blind floral borders to the inner boards. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. School prize labels, dated 1900, to the front pastedown endpapers in each volume. Some minor foxing to the frontispieces and the tissue guards opposite them. Blank white prelim pages are more heavily foxed but the text pages are clean throughout. Back cover has the same recessed panel without the inset. Gilt turn-ins. All edges gilt. . Octavo. Binding extremities lightly rubbed. Intermittent light foxing and minor marginal tear on p. 96. First few gatherings have been re-inserted. Contemporary ink inscription on front flyleaf. A very good copy and an example of a vulnerable deluxe trade binding that has remarkably survived.

Engraved steel plates of Edward Vol. I and Mary Vol, II. Very Good Plus, a few small rubs to calf, moderate toning at end papers up to title pages, old bookseller's description pasted to front end page Vol. I, the interiors clean and bright. Tytler is best known for his History of Scotland, published between 1825 and 1843. A rather uncommon title, particularly in handsome binding. . First Edition. Polished Calf.
