Signed by the Author on the Title Page. 800 g; X, 214 pages, last three pages blank (intentionally), indexed, includes sources and notes. Illustrated throughout with contemporary reproductions of drawings advertisements and photographs, and facsimiles of documents. Colour illustrated dust jacket, has faded on the spine section from exposure to light. Slight rubbing to the top of the dust jacket at the fold over tips and head of the spine, and slight loss of colour through rubbing to the bottom edges of the boards. Inscribed "with my best wishes to Leslie," and then signed by the author on the title page. There is a grubby mark on the front edge of the text block. This book examines the cooking methods and household gadgetry of Australia's past. Beginning with the food and cooking techniques of the tribal Aborigines, and of those Europeans whom the campfire was the kitchen, the author moves on to the days of outhouse kitchens and shortages of ingredients, the industrial awakening and the first influx of gadgets, the revolution the kitchen caused by gas and electricity, and the post-war flood of packaged in processed foods, together with the recent interest in natural foods which counteract this trend.
