However, this is a true First Edition based on publication date (1895) and publication history (12 editions were published between 1895 and 1907). The book is held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide. Quarter-bound in burgundy with tan boards and gold titles. Black endpapers with all pages age-toned and without foxing. Back board shows shelf wear and several small dents. Slight bow to boards as if held in back pocket. Rev. Edward Augustus Horton (1843 - 1931) studied at the Univ. of Chicago and attended and graduated from the Meadville Theological School in 1868. On Sep. 25, 1881 Rev. Horton gave a sermon at the Second Church in Boston entitled Our martyred president; lessons from the life of James A. Garfield.

Robert Waller (1939-2017) was a faculty member at the Univ. of Northern Iowa, serving as dean of the business school (1980-1986). In 1989, dissatisfied with his career he took an unpaid leave of absence to explore the state of Iowa. Photographing the covered bridges found in Madison Co. (Iowa) Waller was the inspired to write the novella in 2 weeks. In the story Robert Kincaid, a photographer encounters the middle-aged farm wife Francesca. After an intense four-day affair Francesca must make a choice; remain with her family or begin a new life.

Jacket is protected with removable mylar cover. Inscribed on flyleaf by the Pulitzer Prize winning author. Charles Sumner was one of the founders of the Republican party and vocal antislavery spokesman in the Senate in the 1850's. The book covers the career of Senator Sumner up to the firing on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Caroling. Recall, this battle was a loss for the US Army and was the beginning of the American Civil War. 9.5 x 6.5 in. 392 pg. with 24 pg. Index.

Title on front board, spine and all edges are gilt. Each book contains a Signed and numbered bookplate from the author. Also included is the COA that accompanies the limited edition. The burgundy faux leather box shows minor shelf wear. Books are very tight, seemingly only opened to take the photographs seen on this listing.
Augustine "Og" Mandino (1923 - 1996) is best known for his book "The Greatest Salesman in the World" (1968) but in total his books have sold over 50 million copies and been translated into over 25 languages. James Street (1903-1954) worked as a journalist before deciding to become a Baptist minister. Unhappy with the job he quit and went back to journalism. He wrote a short story that was published by Cosmopolitan magazine that was later turned into a hit movie (Nothing Sacred) by David Selznick. A Broadway musical (Hazel Flagg) followed, then another short story was turned into a movie (Living It Up) starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. He later went on to write books about boys and dogs.

Earl Derr Biggers (1884-1933) wrote the series of Charlie Chan detective novels with The Chinese Parrot being the second in the series and seemingly the most popular. The story involves two mysterious deaths, the first being the parrot. End of story? I think not. The book was adapted for film twice, as The Chinese Parrot (1927) and as Charlie Chan's Courage (1934). Both films are considered lost films so we're left with the book to solve the mystery of the Chinese Parrot. 5x7.5 in. 316 pg.

Each volume contains an inscription of ownership by Josiah C. Wedgwood dated 1901. Small sticker shows books were purchased in the same town as Josiah lived (Newcastle-on-Tyne). Josiah C. Wedgood the 4th (1872-1943) was a British Liberal and Labour politician who served in the government under the Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald. Clean, tight and without writing in any volume, each in Very Good, very good plus condition. Each bound in red and tan cloth with blue topstain ranging from faded to brilliant. Two volumes come with rice paper as examples of how volumes were originally sold.
Zane Grey (1872-1939), in addition to being an author was also a dentist and played baseball for the University of Pennsylvania (1895). Also included is a check for $100 (adjust for inflation, $1,800) made out to Sid Boerstler, Grey's long-time captain of the sailing ship Marechal Foch (retrofitted and renamed by Grey as Fisherman) from 1928.
