In this study, Freud "gave the fullest account of his views in the field of sociology, one which, as he said elsewhere, 'can be nothing other than applied psychology'" (Jones, p. 364). The first translation into English was published later that year by the Hogarth Press. Analysing the conflict between an individual's instinctive needs and the constraints and demands of society, the book "emphasized the continuance of hostile impulses within developed societies... Aggression against the father was repressed by the incorporated parental image, the superego. This repression was institutionalized in social justice. Discontent was an inevitable aspect of civilization because, even though Oedipal aggression had been repressed, the wish had not; and the wish had the same power to produce guilt that the act did" (DSB, vol. 5, p. 178).
