A large and heavy volume which will incur an additional charge for overseas delivery. Spine sun-faded, loss at head, bottom quarter of backstrip missing. Text block edges tanned. Bookplate on front pastedown, front hinge cracked. Volume loose. Some foxing throughout, heavier towards prelims. Overall still very presentable.

Decorative gilt and lettering on spine. Marbled endpapers. Fore and bottom edges are age toned, top edge gilt. Some foxing. Binding tight. All plates with protective tissue, complete. Undated c.1878

Bound in publisher's original quarter red morocco and red cloth elaborately decorated in gilt on the front board and spine, with blind-stamped decorations on the rear board. Interior hinges split, wear at corners and spine, minor foxing to preliminary pages, otherwise good; plates are fine.

This work looks at turbulent eighteenth century France from the years 1700 to 1789, discussing the years leading up to the infamous French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. Some of the subjects discussed in this work include the lives of the nobility, King and the court, the bourgeoisie, and the army, as well the the parliament, commerce, finance, charity, education, Paris, justice, theatres, society, kitchen, travel, and fashion. Written by Paul Lacroix. Lacroix was a French author and journalist, best known by the pseudonym 'Bibliophile Jacob'. He also wrote 'The Middle Ages and Renaissance', 'Historical Costumes of France from the most Authentic Monuments', and more. This comprehensive survey of 18th century France covers a broad cross-section of French society including the nobility, bourgeoisie, military, clergy, and government, as well as discussions of cuisine, theater, and salons. Better than the second edition, since this edition has 21 color chromolithographs in addition to the 351 full-page and in-text woodblock illustrations.
