Gilt still fresh, but covers have some soiling, bumps to head of spine and corners; very bottom of spine is missing; one signature detached and laid in, and binding is loosening a bit at other spots; former owner's name on fep.. Maroon cloth/boards. Elaborate gilt decoration and lettering on spine; gilt image, banner, and lettering on front cover. xii, 292, [6] pp. with bw frontis and additional bw illustrations and plates. Paul Belloni Du Chaillu was a French-American traveler, zoologist, and anthropologist. He became famous in the 1860s as the first modern European outsider to confirm the existence of gorillas, and later the Pygmy people of central Africa. There are two aspects which makes du Chaillu's books so unique and delightful for young people. Trivial external rubbing and soil; ownership signature ("John Lowell") to front endpaper, else a tight, straight and handsome copy, Near Fine in the attractive publisher's binding. Uniform with the "Harper's Young People's Series," which included at least four of Du Chaillu's works.

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1896 A solid book, hinges intact, has a very slight lean. Brown end papers , numerous engravings including the frontispiece have tissue protection intact. Minor reading smudges and very little foxing although tissues are yellowed.. Brown boards with gilt decoration of gorilla , guns and title. Spine gilt is very dulled although title in embossed. Bumping and rubbing to most edges indicative of shelfwear.
