GB, 1806. Half leather (?contemporary) over marbled boards. Five raised bands. Lettered in gold on spine EMIGRATION BY LORD SELKIRK with (at base) 1806. 232 and lxi pages. This is evidently the second edition but LACKS THE TITLE PAGE. It is stated on page lxi that the book was printed by James Ballantyne & Co (Edinburgh). Fairly clean tight text with occasional annotation. Minor cover and spine wear. . 2nd Edition. Hardback. VG-/No DW.

Some wear and tear to spine edges but cords holding. No title-piece. Old ownership inscription on title page but a very good copy internally. Pp.vii,223,lvi. The book has been described as "an excellent account of the conditions of the Highlands that led to the clearances and emigration." Selkirk was anxious that emigrating Highlanders should go to British colonies and he bought land in North America, including on Prince Edward Island, where he arranged for Highlanders to be settled. First Edition. The Earl of Selkirk developed a particular concern for the economic plight of the Scottish Highlanders, which was heightened during an extensive tour undertaken in 1792. Convinced that emigration was the only possible solution, he developed colonization schemes centred on Prince Edward Island, Upper Canada, and the Red River (what is now Winnipeg). This work was written partially to defend himself against the numerous slanderous reports as to his motives in promoting colonization. It presents an accurate and clearly written assessment of the political and economic conditions in Scotland at the time, the possibilities offered by Canada, and a fairly lengthy discussion of the successful Scottish settlement at Prince Edward Island.
