We have the 13th printing with Tibor Gergely's wonderful illustration of the bright read hook-an d-ladder fire truck coming full speed, off the cover. 9 fireman ride on the fire engine and a black and white dalmation. The lights are on and the bells are ringing.F.D. No 1 is on its way! A single s entence graces each page: "Quick!Connect the hoses!" "Watch out! Make way for the hose car." Although undated, this book has the look and feel of children's books from the 1930s and early 40s. The story of a family of field mice, Black Beetle, Cock Sparrow, Otter, Fox, Speckled Cock, Green Lizard, and assorted other delightful creatures who wear proper clothes and conduct themselves as well-mannered Englishmen, reciting poetry, discussing politics and conducting business. Each chapter (of which there are 10) is titled and begins with a full page b/w finely detailed illustration. Binding is lt. brown cloth on boards with dk green lettering and decoration. First published in 1840, Little Robinson Crusoe of Paris, is the story of two waifs of Paris - a boy and a dog. Eugenie Foa was a prolific nineteenth century writer of books for children. Illustrated, red cloth on board binding with gilt letters on front and spine. Illustrated endpapers by M.L. Kirk: Woman with long Rapunzel like hair, a spinningwheel; a border of roses. Wonderful book plate depicting Puckish-fellow in library holding enormous book. Two or three paragraphs of text on each page surrounded by pen and ink or pen, ink, and wash sketch by Kurt Wiese. Describes for children the physical and natural geography, the history and settlement, the civil war, the cotton industry and other agricultural crops. the capitol, the flag, the flower, recreational opportuni ties, and several cities throughout the state. A beautifully illustrated orange-red cover with navy and yellow accents in lovely condition - very little wear, soiling or rubbing. White paint library n umbers on spine. Endpapers have two discard stamps, small school stamps, gold sticker with "New Method Book Bindery", back endpapers have same stamps, date due paper, library card in pocket but in nea t condition. The publishers touted its washable cov ers and a long life binding with bold declarations on the front and rear covers. This copy has a former owner's name neatly written on the inside cover. Double page illustration on endpapers depict Pi nocchio running through the woods, a fox and a cat watching him, from behind trees. Each page has illustrations. A much abbreviated form of the original story this delightful edition is highly collect able. 3 " chipto spine has revealed string used for sewing the binding. Book remains sturdy and tight. Min scuffs to rear front and edges. Inside, pages are pristine, exceptionally clean - no tears. C over illust. depicts Geppetto with hammer and nail, building his puppet. Folktale elements include ten clever litttle gnomes who warn the children and eventually save them; a mythical Red Wolf; and animals who may be musicians. Believe to be the Revised Edition of "The Bad Island: New York", a Windmill book, first published in 1969. William Steig (born 1907) is best know perhaps , as a witty, somewhat satirical cartoonist; often appearing in the New Yorker. He did however, write and illustrate several marvelous children's books. The full-colour illustrations are spectacular; the prose is equally resplendent with references (volcanoes that belched fire and smoke, spewed hot lave, and spat poison arrows and double-headed toads."_ Children who love "Where the Wild Things Ar e" by Sendak, will probably relish the horrid creatures in this book. A book children under the age of 6 may have difficulty understanding - although they might like the illustrations! Our copy has a dust jacket with a few superficial scratches. One tear on rear. This book was winner of the 1962 Hans Christian Anderson Award and the Newberry Award, two of the most prestigious awards in Children's literature. The simple st ory of a family who live in the country and experience the wonderful joys of rural life. Sendak's illustrations are a perfect pairing with DeJong's narrative. This is an ex-lib copy, but without mush of the usual ex-lib defacements. Binding is sage green with white lettering and a landscape depicting a cornfield, haystack and distant meadows. Front and rear covers have 2 faint clear adhesive tape marks. One very tiny school stamp on title page, under the illust. Rear Date Due and card pocket have been removed from rear endpapers. Otherwise book is in bright, tight, super clean cond; Nomarks on spine. No discard stamp. No tears, chips or finger smudges. In spite of flaws mentioned, this is a lovely copy for any collection.
