From jacket: " (A) memoir of (the author's) life as a conscientious objector during the Second World War... The seasons come and go; the jobs change, but are always hard to learn and boring; there are new companions and old companions - but there is always the land and always there is the weather. This is a work of great beauty, with many remembered moments of joy among the days and months of slogging misery." British author Edward Bishen (1920 - 1996) wrote more than a dozen book during his career. He was also a broadcaster for the BBC. This volume is one of four autobiographies. Passage was the Yukon River and its tributaries, which had been under control of the Athabascan Indians since earliest memory. Boston: Excelsior Publishers, 1958. Signed and inscribed by author on fep to the Jewish Labor Committee. Stated First Edition. 8vo size red clothbound hardcover with black titles on spine and front cover; 262 toned pages including index. Memoir of Rosa Pesotta, (1896 - 1965) a Jewish immigrant from the Ukraine who became a labor organizer in the United States. Pesotta immigrated to avoid an arranged marriage and found work as a seamstress in a shirtwaist factory. Shortly thereafter she joined the ILGWU where she became very active in organizing new chapters/members in the United States and Canada. She became a vice president for the ILGWU, but ultimately split with them as the male-lead woman's organization failed to recognize the value of her work.
