In the first, the story is told of the virulent enmity between American statesman Daniel Webster and Missouri Senator Thomas H. Benton and how it was ended when Benton’s life was saved by a twist of fate after a cannon exploded during a firing exhibition on board the vessel Princeton. Benton felt the hand of God in the sparing of his life and one day he sent word to Webster to join him and his wife for dinner at their home. As bitter a pill as it was for him to swallow, Webster joined them, the two men thence becoming fast friends for the reminder of their lives. Nansela Mathews, who believed it was possible to achieve bodily immortality by use of secret Christian principles. A devout Mormon, Skarin was nevertheless excommunicated for what was deemed her heretical theology, and later went missing. There is disagreement as to her final demise, some believing she successfully achieved the immortality she preached and others claiming she died of natural causes in 1988 in Corning, California. A comprehensive history of sorcerers and sorcery technique, with substantial material on such figures as Apollonius of Tyana, Nostradamus, Dr. John Dee, Cagliostro, Eliphas Levi, Madame Blavatsky, et. al. Only non-fiction book written by popular Fu-Manchu mystery writer Sax Rohmer, who maintained a lifelong interest in the occult and unbeknownst even to his wife was reportedly an active member of the Order Of The Golden Dawn. Published but once in 1914 in small quantity, the book was followed in later years by a number of sporadic expurgated, un-illustrated versions. Seventies Press/ Beacon Books, Boston, 1977; First Edition, second printing; 8vo, 71 pages: A selection of forty-four poems by legendary 15th century Indian mystic and poet Kabir, whose spiritual beliefs were based on Sufi as well as Indian teachings, thus allying him to both Muslims and Hindus. Legend has it that at Kabir’s death, both groups laid claim to the body, and during the funeral procession contentiousness developed, which was only assuaged when the dead Kabir miraculously appeared and directed the throng to look under the shroud which covered his corpse. On raising the cloth nothing but a heap of flowers was found. These were divided by the rival faiths, half to the Muslims, who buried them, and half to the Hindus, who burned them, thus keeping the peace. Mellifluously translated into English by Robert Bly.
