This is an early biography of Dickens, "The Life and Writings of Charles Dickens" by Phebe Hanaford. 1871 1st edition; B.B. Russell; Boston. With a frontispiece portrait of Dickens and his signature in gold on the front cover. Published shortly after Dickens' death in 1870, this is the first of his biographies by a woman, and one of the earliest of all. There are four pages of publisher's advertisements at the back.Condition:Owner's signatures on front free end paper in pen and pencil. Front hinge starting internally. Spine fading. The ends of the spine are worn. Cloth tears at the corners. The pages are age-toned, but mostly clean with only underlining in pencil on pages 10-15...no other writing found. Overall the book is in Good condition.
