This is a rare, beautifully illustrated book of poetry, "THE ETERNAL LAUGHTER and Other Poems" by W. Starling Burgess. 1903 1st edition, 1st printing; W.B. Clarke Company; Boston. With an Introduction by Julian Hawthorne (Nathaniel Hawthorne's son). The book features wonderful full-page illustrations (including two engraved plates with tissue guards) by Edward Lyne and Edmund H. Garrett. Gilt top page edges.

W. Starling Burgess (father of Tasha Tudor, American illustrator and author) was an American yacht designer, aviation pioneer, and naval architect. He was awarded the highest prize in aviation, the Collier Trophy in 1915, just two years after Orville Wright won it. In 1933 he partnered with Buckminster Fuller to design and build the radical Dymaxion Car. Between 1930 and 1937 he created three America's Cup winning J-Class yachts. Antique poetry book - "Ferishtah's Fancies" by Robert Browning. 1884 1st Edition; Smith, Elder, & Co.; London. There are 8 pages of advertisments at the back of the book. There are 12 poems in all, with an Epilogue.Condition:Clean covers and spine with no stains; the lettering on the spine has dulled; the corners are worn, as are the top and bottom edges of the spine. Tight binding. Crack at front hinge before the Prologue page and between pages 32/33. The text pages are in very good condition - lightly tanned with no writing found (though the back end paper has one line of text written in pencil at the top edge); light ink smudge on page 65...no other stains found; the lower-right corner tip of the title page has torn off and there is a small tear at the outer edge of one of the advertisement pages at the back of the book. Wear along the long edge of the front board.

The book features two wonderful Louis Prang full-page chromolithographs and four poems. Decorative cloth front cover. The chromolithographs are printed on a heavier paper stock. Smaller in size - the book measures 6 3/4" tall x 4 3/8" wide.Condition:Light soiling to the covers. The front cover has a light stain at the top-right corner, and at the right edge. The salmon cloth on the back cover and along the left edge of the front cover has partially faded. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers and all pages are firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are clean with no notable issues found. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.

This is a handsome, fine-binding copy of "GEMS FROM TENNYSON" - a collection of poetical works by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. 1866; Ticknor and Fields; Boston. There are illustrations throughout by a variety of artists, including Winslow Homer and F.O.C. Darley. Nicely bound in full leather with a gilt border around the edges of the covers, gilt lettering and accents on the spine, gilt page edges on all sides, marbled end papers, five raised bands on the spine, and a decorative gilt border along the edges of the inside covers.Condition:There are a few areas on the covers where the blue leather has faded; worn corners. There is a 2" split at the bottom-right corner of the spine; small split at the top-right corner of the spine. Both covers are firmly attached, though the front cover is a bit shaky. Bright gilt page edges on all sides. Nice interior - the pages are lightly age-toned, but mostly clean with only an occasional stain/smudge and small foxing spot. Overall the book is in Good+ condition.

Bits of paper have chipped away along most of the length of the spine. No loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with only some tiny foxing specks to a few of the pages. The front end paper has a very neatly written inscription in ink dated 1894. Overall the book is in Good+ condition.

With a frontispiece photograph of Norton and F.J. Child "about 1854." From the Preface: "This little book, printed to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Charles Eliot Norton, contains a poem by him, inspired by Walt Whitman's 'Leaves of Grass,' and also his review of that work, printed anonymously in Putnam's Monthly for September, 1855. The introductory essay gives the evidence for ascribing both the poem and the review to Norton, together with a few notes on his attitude toward Whitman in 1855 and thereafter." Norton was an American author, social critic, and Harvard professor whom "many of his contemporaries considered the most cultivated man in the United States."
