DETAILED RECORDS OF THE BRITISH SUBJUGATION AND COLONIZATION OF MODERN GHANA first edition 8vo. xii, 557, [1 (advt.)]pp., coloured frontispiece map, maroon cloth gilt, small bruise on spine, else a very nice copy. Uncommon. This book collects and prints a mass of original documents relating to the European, in particular British, scramble to control the wealth and trade of regions adjacent to the western African coast and the consequent progressive militarisation and colonization the region. It covers "the period from the formation of the last African Company of Merchants in 1750 to the conclusion of the third Ashantee War in 1874" during which British, Dutch and Danish interests bought and sold each other coastal forts without "any consultation whatsoever with the tribes concerned therewith" and garrisoned these forts with British army units (regular troops, the Royal African Corps and troops imported from the West Indies). tall 8vo. xx, 731pp., 13 plates (9 folding including one coloured), numerous illustrations through text, 116 brightly coloured and patterned actual dyed cloth samples pasted in as illustrations, illustrations in text, very well rebound in maroon cloth, spine lettered gilt, very good copy with clean fresh samples.
This work was first published in 1912 and this second edition is extensively revised and updated. The number of real cloth samples was increased from 84 to 118,"all new, and most of them produced on the large scale by the recipes which they are intended to illustrate. The preparation of special patterns for an edition of a book of this kind means much more work and management than meets the eye, but the authors are of the opinion that the time-honoured system of presenting specimens of the actual thing to the reader is well worth the trouble involved" [preface]. ESTC w29303 locating copies only in BL and O outside of the U.S.A.Forbes (1742-1812), was the Pastor of the church in Raynham, President pro-tem of Brown University and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He seems to have specialised in sermons on public occasions; in 1784 he preached at the execution for burglary of one John Dixon.This sermon reflects a key moment in the politics of the young Republic and the special political character of Massachusetts. REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED COPY first edition folio xviii, 278, [1 (colophon)], [1 (blank)]pp., 12 photographic plates (most double sided) with 23 images, original dark blue cloth, front cover and spine gilt blocked, fore and lower edges untrimmed, a few trivial fox spots on the deckled fore edge of a few leaves, else as new in the grey paper dust jacket (also as new) overprinted in red and black. A remarkable survival in this condition. Fell (1625 - 1686), English churchman and influential academic, served as Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, and later concomitantly as Bishop of Oxford. Richard Valentine Williams (1877-1946), Irish poet, playwright and small-press publisher who wrote under the pseudonym of Richard Rowley, was friendly with many contemporary English writers. His publisher in the 1920s was Duckworth and the Sitwells were particular friends, providing the context for his interesting note in this copy. Williams wrote: "At the time of writing S. The Royal African Corps (1800-1821), an infantry unit in the British Army, grew out of Fraser's Corps of Infantry which had been raised in 1800 for the defence of the Island of Goree off the Senegal coast. It was renamed the African Corps and then in 1804 the Royal African Corps. It was composed primarily of deserters and prisoners with some additional indigenous African soldiers being attached to make up numbers and it was used for colonial garrison duty, often of penal establishments. Garrison Morton 405 and 3055 (first edition of 1811) Burns (1781-1813) "was the first to suggest [in the 1811 printing] ligature of the innominate artery. His book describes 'Burns's space, the fascial space at the suprasternal notch" [G. & M., 405] and the book also contained the "first recorded case of chloroma" [G. & M., 3055]. An edition was published in Baltimore, U.S.A., in 1823. Allan Burns (1781-1813), Scottish surgeon and physician, established himself as a lecturer on anatomy and surgery at Glasgow, vivid in illustration and accurate knowledge brought him considerable success. It was reprinted in Baltimore, U.S.A., in 1797 (Welch American Children's Books .. to 1821, 126). Welch attributes the book to Brewer. "These stories were not translated from the Siamese, but the scene was laid in Siam to make the story more interesting to young people" [Welch].Brewer (bap. 1766), writer, "in his youth he served as a midshipman ... and visited America, India, China, and Scandinavia.
