Scarce volume of children's poetry charmingly illustrated by Cecile Walton. A presentation copy, inscribed by the author behind title-page; 'Mr and Mrs Bond, with best wishes from Austin Priestman.' Distinctive gilt binding decoration, endpaper illustrations and black & white imagery throughout by Cecil Walton, whose principal work was a handsome volume of Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales some 13 years earlier. CONDITION: Minor edge-wear, spine a little skewed, illustrated endpapers starting at hinges but holding firm. Light foxing to first & last few leaves. Gilt slightly dulled. Complete with 22 black & white illustrative plates by James Guthrie [that of 'The Elf' seasonal publications], accompanied by title & contents pages to total 24 leaves. Printed by W. H. Broome on 1st November 1900, published at The White Cottage, Shorne, Kent, England. Original green wrappers, faded & edge-worn with some small tears & tiny chips of loss. Split along spine repaired, string replaced. Mark to front wrap resulting from an old price-label. Some scattered instances of foxing, generally to margins, contents otherwise clean. 25.8cm tall. Previous owner gift inscription central to front free end-paper and dated Christmas 1924 in same hand to lower corner of rear endpaper. Laurence Housman's attractive gilt-decorated binding over green cloth, decorated throughout in black & white. No previous owner marks or bookplates. Solid binding, negligible edge-wear concentrated to head & tail of spine. Light foxing to endpapers, contents a little browned. A few tiny worm-holes to boards, visible to very tip of final three leaves but otherwise contents unaffected. All edges gilt. Unfaded & square binding, gilt decoration bright. London: J. M. Dent & Co. / and Sons Limited, 1897. First Edition . Hardcover. Good. W. B. Macdougall. The pair of volumes on Germanic heroic legend by partners Armour & Macdougall. Each work is translated by Margaret Armour and illustrated throughout by William B. MacDougall. The 1897 Nibelung caught Macdougall near the peak of his artistic output, while the much later published Gudrun (1928) is a little distance from that peak. NIBELUNG: largely a translation of Simrock's arrangement of the mediaeval text, with input from Bartsch and Niendorf, in plain prose rendering so as to be as near as possible to the original. Bound in brown cloth boards, toned, over lighter blue cloth spine, darkened and re-backed. Bookplate of Donald & Norah Van Den Bergh central to front pastedown. All edges untrimmed. Original white buckram cloth adorned with gilt stamped decoration to front board & spine in Art Deco style by T. Sturge Moore, who designed various bindings for Yeats poetical works including 'The Tower' in 1928. Signed by translator on numbered limitation page behind half-title. Neat bookplate of D.C.C. Griffiths central to front pastedown. Endpapers faintly browned, otherwise contents clean & bright. Top fore-edge of pages gilt, other edges untrimmed. One of 2,000 copies of the first printing in majority of original dust-jacket, attractively decorated by T. Sturge-Moore. Copyright page and a few of the final gatherings un-opened. Gilt decoration bright, a few trivial surface-marks and minor edge-wear. Contents clean but for a few browned spots & age-toning. No previous owner marks. Final few leaves with shallow crease. Oscar Wilde's wonderfully illustrated edition of 'A House of Pomegranates', compete with 16 plates, title-page, decorated endpapers, binding and letter initials by Jessie M. King. The first edition with these illustrations & in this larger format, stated sixth Methuen edition overall. Tight & sound, spine cloth slightly sunned, moderate foxing throughout, a few lower page corners with gentle tidemark. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Two of the tipped-in plates have small corner-creases. Minor careful repair to head of spine. Bold orange decorative framing to front board & spine over blue cloth. Unusually, the paper on which the plates are mounted do not include the frames found in most printings. 25.9cm tall. A pleasing copy overall. Housed in removable plastic sleeve. Kay Nielsen's first illustrated work, 'In Powder and Crinoline - Fairy Tales Retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch', published in 1913 by Hodder and Stoughton in London. Here, the limited deluxe edition, issued in full green gilt-decorated vellum, this being number 155 of 500 copies and signed by Kay Nielsen on limitation page. CONDITION: Collated complete with 26 tipped-in colour plates and captioned tissue-guards, 2 more plates than are provided in the standard trade edition. Green vellum boards a little bowed, hinges holding firmly. Decorated endpapers and some additional vignettes & decorations throughout. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Text-block structurally sound. Foxing to endpapers, a little age-toning towards page edges, but generally clean throughout.
