The author (1777-1842) went to Russia in 1804 at the Czar's invitation to depict Russian historical events. An affair with a Russian princess forced him to leave the country, but he later returned and married the lady. Yeizan (Kikugawa) (Japanese, fl. 1810-1830) A framed pair of Japanese woodblock prints, kakemono no-e format, each in two sheets joined vertically, approx. sight size 23" x 3-3/4", matted and framed under glass overall approx. 28-1/4" x 7-1/4". One depicts two partial figures of geishas folding paper (origami), and the other depicts partial figures of a man and a geisha. Condition: Creases, fading, may be trimmed, surface soils, some worming, losses and repairs. Matting is acidic; stains. Frames nicked.. Good.

Paris: Libraire de Firmin-didot Cie, 1888. FIRST EDITION, first printing. Six volume set complete. The title page gives a mere hint of the opulence of the plates in this work. The statement that there are 500 plates, of which 300 are chromolithographic color with metallic accents, and another 200 plates in two color cameo, do not begin to give the reader any indication of the treasure trove of visual information that is about to be encountered. Many of the plates fold out to double size. The vast diversity of different clothing sttyles used throughout history, and in all geographical areas of the world are illustrated. From ancient Egypt to Medieval, Samurai controlled, Japan, and from Renaissance France to the harems of the Ottoman Empire, this is just the beginning of the long list of styles and cultures that are shown, described, and catalogued. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque engraver and caricaturist in the 17th century. He was skilled as an etcher, draughtsman, painter, sculptor and medalist.
