London: Henry Baldwin, for Charles Dilly. Full leather with elegant gilt decorations within the compartments on the spine. First Edition, First Issue with "gve" on p. 135. Provenance: On the title pages of both volumes is: "P W Baker Ranston 1793." The signer was Peter William Baker, a man of cultivated tastes who purchased Ranston House at Iwerne Courtney (Dorset). The books were probably inherited by his son, Sir Edward Baker Littlehales, who rose through the military ranks to become secretary to Lord Cornwallis and wrote about a trip to Detroit in the United States, but no evidence reflects that although small bookplates have been removed from inside the front cover. Inside the cover of both volumes can be found the armorial bookplates of Sir Edward Baker, the son of Sir Edward Baker Littlehales. Signed on the front free endpaper by Wilson and dated 1881, the year of publication. Contains a sheet of paper with notations, ostensibly Wilson's. Occasional margin lines and notations in Wilson's shorthand. On May 10, 1881, Wilson wrote to his cousin Harriet Woodrow: "I practice elocution hard and systematically every day. I intend to spare no trouble in gaining complete command of my voice in reading and speaking." Robert Alexander Kraig, in Woodrow Wilson and the Lost World of the Oratorical Statesman does not include Hamill in his chapter on Wilson's oratorical education. Staining, wear, Good. . Good. No. 511 of 750 sets with a notation below that is indiscernible. This set is important because it contains so many first printings (including the important Billy Budd and all of the poems except "Battle Pieces," "John Marr," and "Timoleon), a number of first book printings, and the First British Printing of Clarel. Boston: Roberts Brothers. Complete in 2 vols. Original green cloth. Vol. 1 has 1869 on the title page, no Part One statement on the spine, and the notice for "Little Women, Part Two" on page 341. BAL indicates that there were at least three printings dated 1869 before the notice was added to p. 341 and that four 1869 printings took place without the Part One statement on the spine. Vol I, then, is an early printing of the First Edition. Vol. 2 has the note on p. iv that Little Women, Part First, is published in a volume uniform with this, has 4 entries on p. 364, and has "Handy Volume Series/ 1/ Happy Thoughts. . . ." heading p. 366. Vol.2, then, is a First Edition, Second State. Volume 1 has been expertly rebacked with with original spine laid down. Three leaves with a tiny bit of foxing, Very Good. Provenance: Each of the 3 volumes contains the bookplate of Sir Edward Northey, who served as Attorney General from 1701-07 and 1710-18, part of that time for Queen Anne. In his volumes, Dugdale provided a general history of Catholicism, an account of the development of monasteries in England, and descriptions and histories of individual cathedrals, monasteries, priories, hospitals, and towns where ecclesiastical buildings were located. First and Limited Edition: No. 11 of only 25 copies on Imperial Japanese Paper and signed by Mary Mellor. Large 4to. 211 pp. printed text and facsimiles of manuscripts. This book was composed to honor the contributions of women during World War I. Debussy was one of 92 men and 30 women who participated in the project, offering a range of artistic contributions from France, England, the United States, Canada, and Russia. Among contributors, in addition to Debussy, were Auguste Rodin, Rudyard Kipling, Robert Baden-Powell, Anatole France, Lord Kitchner, Pierre Loti, Marcel Prevost, Jerome K. Superb color plates (including maps, one folding). Only one previous edition was issued with printed color plates-the 1876 edition-although some previous copies had hand-colored plates. Catlin traveled extensively among the Indian tribes illustrating and describing their cultures in a classic account that has become one of the major sources for later knowledge about them.
