Octavo, pp. 308, publisher's original tan pictorial cloth with a design by the author's father, pre-Raphaelite artist Ford Madox-Brown [likely his only binding design]. Binder's ticket: "Bound by Leighton Sons and Hodge" on rear paste-down. The author's only novel published before his death at age 19. With the signature of the author's half-sister, Lucy Madox Rossetti, dated 1874 on the front free endpaper. Lucy Madox (Brown) Rossetti (19 July 1843 - 12 April 1894) the only daughter of Ford Madox-Brown by his first marriage. Lucy was a painter and artists' model, and in 1874 became the wife of William Michael Rossetti. She wrote a biography of Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, Mrs. Shelley, for John Ingram's Eminent Women series, 1890. A fine copy in the rare dust jacket; the dust jacket has three small edge tears (1/2"), slight loss at the corners and spine ends; spine faded and dust- soiled, else very good.

Octavo (22 cm x 16 cm), full brown morocco with circular orange morocco inlays on front and rear, further circular designs in silver and blind, lettered in silver, orange morocco doublures with silver rules, silk free endleaves, all edges silver. Original wrappers bound in, pp. 147; "illustrée de dix compositions colouriées de Chas ~ Laborde". Attractive binding signed by Marguerite Fray, among the notable French woman binders of the Art-Deco period. Some rubbing to binding along joints and edges of boards, else very good. Monod 4278.

Sunnyside, Orpington, Kent: George Allen, various dates: 1873-1895.. Hardcover. Very Good. Octavo, lavender cloth, backed in half gilt vellum, with morocco labels, top edge gilt. Complete in nine volumes, as follows: Volume I is the sixth edition, 1895. Volume II is the fourth edition, 1895 Volume III is the fourth edition, 1873. Volumes IV - IX, are first editions, 1874- 1887. Lengthy gift inscription repeated on first blank of each volume; uneven fading to the lavender cloth; some dust soiling to vellum and light chipping to edges of spine labels, (particularly to Volume I - see pictures), else a very good, handsome set in sturdy vellum bindings by Hartchards of Piccadilly. Heavy set, postage to be determined, based on destination and delivery standard required.

Octavo, blue holland boards, tan cloth spine, 129pp., with numerous illustrations, decorative borders, binding design and endpapers by Will Bradley. A masterpiece of American Art Nouveau design. Small rubber-stamp at preface, wear to edges and spine ends, else very good. Turn of a Century #134; Bambace A9..

London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1856-1860. Volume 1 is the sixth edition, volume 2 is the fourth edition, volumes 3- 5 are first editions. Red half morocco bindings, Imperial 8vos. With the estate bookplate of Sir James Dunn, inserted after his death. From the library of Lady Beaverbrook, at Daybreak. All volumes lack half-titles, foxing to plates and endpapers. Bindings are very good, with minor scuffs and wear, volume two has a slight bump to boards, volume five has a tiny chip at the crown. Attractive and sturdy bindings..

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1883. American Revised Edition. Octavo, publisher's green cloth, pp. vi, 246, (12) publisher's ads. First blank with the signature of: "Stephen B. Leacock / Toronto / UC College". Leacock attended Upper Canada College (1882-87) and later taught there for a further nine years. The rear blank bears Leacock's pencil notes, recto and verso, ca. 40 lines. A few further brief annotations scattered throughout text. Occasional soiling to text, head of spine frayed with slight loss, cloth covers a bit marked and rubbed, else about very good. .

The "ghost" of Wiseman's address is impressed upon the rear panel of the dust jacket, presumably from when Laurence addressed the books [from England] to Montreal. Top corners bumped, else very good in an edge worn dust jacket, with small closed tears. An important association copy. .

Demy octavo, full contemporary speckled calf, red morocco title label, pp. xxiv + 382 [with the half-title and final blank]. Large folding engraved map of Corsica by Thomas Phinn 12? x 17¾". First printing of map, with neither imprint, the scale of miles, nor the division of the margins into degrees. Map inserted facing A1. E2 (pp. 67-8) and Z3 (pp. 357-8) are cancels. Without the misprint 'fo' on page 93, l, 6, nor 'my own of' on p. 296, l, 18, and with all the remaining misprints noted by Pottle. Offsetting from binding to margins of endleaves and title page. British poet and proprietor of the Poetry Bookshop, Harold Monro's copy with his pencil signature on the front endpaper and a date of 28/5/20. Several pages unopened throughout the text block, cloth boards bright, spine just a bit dull, but a very good or better copy. Note Harold Monro's professional relationship with Ford Madox Hueffer was of some significance. Hueffer read numerous times at Monro's Poetry Bookshop. Munro published numerous pieces by Hueffer in the various literary publications he edited. Bibliography Harvey A24 (a).
