Octavo, pp. 308, publisher's original tan pictorial cloth with a design by the author's father, pre-Raphaelite artist Ford Madox-Brown [likely his only binding design]. Binder's ticket: "Bound by Leighton Sons and Hodge" on rear paste-down. The author's only novel published before his death at age 19. With the signature of the author's half-sister, Lucy Madox Rossetti, dated 1874 on the front free endpaper. Lucy Madox (Brown) Rossetti (19 July 1843 - 12 April 1894) the only daughter of Ford Madox-Brown by his first marriage. Lucy was a painter and artists' model, and in 1874 became the wife of William Michael Rossetti. She wrote a biography of Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, Mrs. Shelley, for John Ingram's Eminent Women series, 1890.
