Recent brown half morocco over marbled boards, spines with raised bands, gilt lettered dark green labels, lettered direct to another panel. 550 hand coloured plates all with letterpress descriptions over one or two leaves. Occasional mild offsetting from some of the plates to opposing text leaves in the later volumes, a very good set overall. Sowerby issued his masterfully illustrated catalogue of British minerals in parts between 1802 and 1817, although the title pages of the books are dated from 1804 onwards. Lawrence H. Conklin, in his paper on Sowerby's mineralogical works (Mineral Record, July 1995), refers to this as "the supreme work of British topographical mineralogy" and… Leer más

Four parts, each containing subdivisions of text volumes and/or portfolios of illustrations. Dark blue half morocco, the text volumes and solander boxes over marbled boards with gilt labels, the portfolios and slipcases over grey cloth. Part Ia - text volume, titled as above, (147, (1) pp.); Part Ib - "The Plates with an Introduction and Plate-by-Plate Commentary by Bo Lindberg", the introduction and 22 plates (Blake's title design plus 21) in different states presented in individual fascicles; Part IIa - text volume titled "Colour Versions of William Blake's Book of Job Designs from the Circle of John Linnell. [c. 1800].. Small folio. Contemporary half calf over patterned boards, colour illustrated endpapers, all edges blue-green, held in a recent bespoke mushroom cloth Solander box, gilt lettered to the spine. 122 charming and delicately hand drawn and coloured illustrations of mushrooms, each hand numbered to the corner, plus another in the same hand loosely inserted, some, but by no means all, of the illustrations captioned in pencil. Spine very worn with losses, the joints cracked and the boards still held by the strings. No name is attached to the volume or the illustrations but whoever compiled the album clearly demonstrates their affinity with the subject and a great deal of artistic skill and, with no way of knowing if the illustrations were intended to be published, one must therefore assume the illustrations were done by a gifted amateur. It is not dated but the appearance of the binding and the very distinctive endpapers suggest that it is either very late 18th or early 19th century.

London: Cruchley Mapseller (from Arrowsmith's), 38 Ludgate Street, St. Paul's, 1830.. A fine large plan of London in three horizontal parts, measuring approximately 121 x 134 cm if conjoined (including the large decorative border), full wash colour in block and outline, each third of the map dissected into 18 sections and mounted on linen, folds into the original green marbled slipcase with a Cruchley's printed title label to the upper panel. The slipcase worn but sound, a very good example of a beautiful map. Showing the extents from Highgate down to Dulwich and Stratford across to Hammersmith. Howgego, 317a, (3). The third edition of a map first published two years earlier. One of Cruchley's largest and most decorative plans of London, he had issued variations on smaller scales and extents in the years prior to this. Cruchley was quite possibly spurred into producing this larger and more decorative plan by the appearance of the Greenwoods' magnificent plan of the city in 1827.

Original gilt titled green cloth, subtly recased, spine ends with some light rubbing, mild discolouration to the upper cover, held in a recent green cloth folding box. Freeman 376, variant a. First published the previous year. The first issue of the second edition also appeared in 1859; but for the the mention of "fifth thousand" on the title page the two issues are identical.

London: Printed... by Rouland Hall for Humfrey Toye dwelling in Paules Churche yearde at the signe of the Helmette, 1562.. First English edition. Small 4to. (10), 32, 32-68, 99-100, 1-42, [3] ff. Six leaves (D3-E4) with slight loss to the lower corners just clipping the text, now sensitively repaired and the missing characters expertly filled in by hand to style, three leaves (F1, Ee2 and Ee3) supplied in close matching facsimile, recent period style vellum, gilt lettered red label. An attractive copy of a scarce work. John Shute's first English translations of two important early works relating to the Ottoman Empire: Cambini's "Commentario... della Origine de Turchi" and Paolo Giovio's account of the wars between the Turks and the Albanians led by Skanderbeg. Cambini's work was first published in 1529, two years after his death, Giovio's in 1531, with several Italian editions of each appearing in succeeding decades. London: Printed for the Author, 1773.. Second edition, "corrected and enlarged". Folio. (ii), iv, ii, 716 pp. Later tan half calf over early worn boards, gilt lettered green spine label, marbled endpapers, old inscriptions inked out to the verso of the front free endpaper, two old pieces of paper affixed adjacent to this, one of which is a newspaper cutting. Frontispiece with later, slightly naive, handcolouring plus 80 plates featuring fine contemporary handcolouring, plate 29 supplied from another copy with old colouring executed to a similarly high standard. Slight fading to the spine, plate 8 torn to the lower corner with slight loss to the text but not the illustration, occasional minor marking, generally a very good copy of a magnificent work. Henrey, volume II, p.95-98. First published in 1757 with sixty plates, this edition benefits from the inclusion of a further 20 plates. Usually found with black and white plates - coloured copies are much scarcer on the market.

London: Printed for George Nicol, 1790.. First edition. 4to. iv, 88 pp. Later dark brown half calf over marbled boards, spine with gilt rules and lettered to the compartments. A folding plate and 3 folding charts. One of the latter shaved to the neatline along the lower edge, all the plates with a little foxing and minor creasing, a very good copy overall. Bligh's account of the infamous mutiny aboard the HMS Bounty and his subsequent escape. An accomplished seaman, in 1776 Bligh had been appointed by James Cook as master of the Resolution as part of his third and final voyage. He gained promotion to the rank of lieutenant and several important commissions thereafter, and was given command of the Bounty in 1787 and set sail for the East Indies, tasked with bringing back breadfruits and other botanical samples to British colonies in the West Indies. Limited edition, no. 64 of 215 copies, folio, xx, 146 pp. 32 coloured pochoir illustrations - 14 full page, marbled endpapers. Bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in later vellum with yapp edges, without the morocco onlay found on copies bound up earlier , t.e.g., gilt titled spine, very faint soiling to the spine ends otherwise a lovely copy, cloth slipcase. A "major landmark in Nash's artistic career, providing him with a rich source of visual imagery to which her returned for the rest of his life" (Colvin), and perhaps the finest achievement of the Curwen Press. However it sold poorly - 15 guineas being an enormous sum in the post-depression years, and only 80 copies were immediately bound up. Colvin 19.

Recent panelled calf, spine with raised bands, old gilt lettered red label preserved, all edges red. Frontispiece, engraved title, folding map of Palestine and 27 double plates comprising 19 maps (unusually many with old hand colouring, likely 19th century), a plan of Jerusalem, 4 plans and views of temples and the Tabernacle plus 3 plates illustrating the habits of the Jews, the "pantheon" of Jewish idols of antiquity and the "Fragmenta Sacra". Londoni [London]: Impensis Joannis Martyn, Regiæ Societatis Typographi.., 1676.. First edition. Folio. (xii), 307, (5) pp. Early full vellum, remnants of original handwritten spine title. 77 engraved plates plus two folding letterpress tables. Some worming to the rear free endpaper and pastedown but not affecting any other adjacent leaves, degrees of browning to the contents, occasionally very dark, though a good number of the plates remain fresh, some minor wear to the extremities, else very good. Francis Willughby (1635-72) and John Ray (1627-1705) met as students at Trinity College, Cambridge. Whilst Ray's interests primarily led him to the study of botany, Willughby studied the animal world - firstly in Britain, then Europe between the years 1663-65 with fellow naturalist Philip Skippon. First edition, eleven volumes bound in ten - with the index volume bound at the end of volume I, 4to. 193 hand coloured plates, numbered to 184 with 9 bis plates, marbled endpapers and sides. Contemporary half calf, joints expertly restored, modern red and green morocco spine labels. Some occasional minor spotting but overall a very good clean set. Originally published as "A General Synopsis of Birds" in the 1780s; this work updating it and the several supplements that followed.

Lavenham: The William Blake Trust, 2009.. Limited edition, one of 36 special copies from a total edition of 150 copies. Folio. 95, (1) pp. Publisher's wine red half calf over black moiré silk, gilt lettered to the spine with a matching gilt lettered label to the upper board, slipcase in matching moiré silk. Illustrated in colour and black and white; slipcase also housing a matching red full calf portfolio enclosing a card wallet holding fine reproductions of Blake's original watercolours mounted on card, as per the originals. Just some slight dustiness to the slipcase, a sumptuous production. An out-of-series set, marked as such on the watercolours wallet, being John Commander's own copy. First edition, two volumes, 4to. 115 plates - a portrait of Lord Grenville, 64 hand coloured aquatints and 17 hand coloured engravings of the various gowns plus the 33 Founders plates, all in excellent condition. Frontispiece and one further plate plus the text in volume I, with the bulk of the plates and the plate list bound in volume II. Handsomely bound in 20th century brown crushed half morocco, t.e.g., faint rubbing to the spines otherwise a handsome set. A well preserved collection of perhaps the most beautiful illustrations printed of the city; Ackermann utilising some of the finest artists of the day - men such as Pugin, Westall and Nash - to make the drawings. Second edition, or "A New Edition, Very Much Enlarged". 4to. viii, (iv), 610 pp. 19th century half speckled calf over marbled boards, gilt rules to the spine, gilt lettered green label, all edges marbled. Binding expertly resewn and the joints neatly repaired, occasional foxing, mostly mild, an attractive copy. First published anonymously in 1798, Malthus drew upon the works of Hume and Smith amongst others to explain his conservative conception of population control. "The central idea of the essay... was a simple one. The population of a community... increases geometrically, while food supplies increase only arithmetically... The 'Essay' was highly influential in the progress of thought in early 19th century Europe... [it] came at the right time to harden the existing feeling against the Poor Laws" - Printing and the Mind of Man, 251. First edition. 8vo. 207, (1), (8) pp. Publisher's ribbed brown cloth, the upper part and lower extremity of the spine missing and skilfully restored to style, ownership inscription of William Rendle dated 1864 to the head of the title page with his book label to the front pastedown giving his address as "33 Bridge House Place, Newington Causeway, S.E.", some pencilled marginalia at intervals throughout, the recto of the rear free endpaper more extensively annotated in pencil. Mill's essay on the individual's relation with society and authority and the rules that he thought should govern those interactions. It has gone on to be viewed "as the kernel of his social philosophy" (ODNB) and remains hugely influential to this day. William Rendle (1811-93) was born in Cornwall but was brought to live in south London with his family at the age of 6. London: Jonathan Cape, (1984).. First edition, 8vo, 160 pp. Inscribed from Dahl on the half title to his childhood friend Douglas Highton, and with two autograph letters also inserted. Cloth, d.w., a fine copy. The first letter, on a headed postcard, was sent with the book - "This little book is published next week. You will find yourself in it..." Dahl starts, referring to a story featured on pp. 108-111 where as a schoolboy Dahl had been unfairly punished and Highton had written to his father to complain about it. It didn't help, but Dahl concludes the printed account "it was... a touching and generous gesture from one small boy to another and I have never forgotten it." He goes on (in the postcard) to admit that some parts of the book "are slightly coloured by my natural love of fantasy." The second letter, again on headed stationery, must date from a few months later, with Dahl mentioning that he has had letters complaining about the portrayal of their school… Leer más

Venetia [Venice]: nelle case de figlioli di Aldo [I Manuzio], 1545.. Fourth Aldine printing. Small folio. (122) ff. Eighteenth century full pigskin, gilt lettering to the spine, all edges green, a single leaf in book three lacking but the text supplied in consummate manuscript, predating or contemporary with the binding. Faint dampstain cutting across the upper corner of the last 16 leaves at the gutter, also evident on both pastedowns, a few marks to the boards, an attractive copy. Baldessare Castiglione (1478-1529) was very much a man of his day, educated in a Humanist school in Milan in the 1490s where he also served at the court of Duke Ludovico Sforza. He returned to his native Mantua on the death of his father at the age of 21, whereupon he entered the service of the local marquis, Francesco Gonzaga, for the next five years. Contemporary half calf rebacked to style, raised bands, gilt lettered red label, an autograph letter signed from the author bound in on a tab at the front of the book. Originally published in the eleventh volume of the Asiatic Researches. However, not being in "common circulation, it is now republished; and may prove acceptable, as a short and clear account of an oriental people, of singular and religion and manners, with whose history the European reader can be but little acquainted." The letter is addressed to "My dear Hare", Malcolm's friend the writer and theologian Julius Hare. He apologises for being in a "great bustle", but confides that "they are I am told to make me Governor of Bombay again and give me other work congenial to my whole soul."
