The map is in excellent condition with no loss around the edges, but there is a 2” split along the top horizontal fold through the “Bay of Funda” (with a small piece of what appears to be acid-free paper tape just under the fold) and a one-half inch split at the bottom of the vertical fold, not affecting the map. Little, Brown and Company, Boston, 1938. First Edition. Hardcover (in Slipcase). Near Fine Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: N.C. Wyeth. Book Signed by Author and Illustrator. This is a beautifully presented copy of the limited, double-signed Arundel Edition of the book kept in the original slipcase. The book and the separate packet of 14 plates of N. C. Wyeth's illustrations are, in turn, protected in a dark-green custom clamshell case by Asprey & Garrand. The case is covered in cloth with a morocco leather six compartment spine with the title, author, and edition information in bright gilt in three of the compartments. It is lined on the inside with matching dark green velvet. The limitation page notes this is copy 955 of of the 1,075 numbered copies and is signed by both Roberts and Wyeth. The plates are in the publisher's envelope, noting that they are "A Set of Illustrations painted by N. C. Charles Gosselin, Paris, 1835. Second Edition. Hardcover (Quarter Leather). Very Good Condition. Book Second edition of the first part of this classic analysis of democracy in America, printed the same year as the small first edition of around 500 copies. The first volume’s topic is the institutions of the United States (Institutions des États-Unis) and the second is the functioning of those institutions (Fonctionnement de ces institutions). In a publication note Tocqueville says that because the first edition sold out so quickly, he was only able “to introduce very slight changes in the second. He had to confine himself to correcting some typographical errors and to removing a small number of material errors” (translated from the French). The second part was not published until April 1840 and was released with the eighth edition of this first part. The map has been hand colored and remains bright. James Howell (c.1594-1666) was an author of political and historical works who traveled widely in Europe and produced this book, which is often described as the first continental handbook for travelers. The full title is: "Instructions and Directions For Forren Travell. Shewing by what cours, and in what compas of time, one may take an exact Survey of the Kingdomes, and States of Christendome, and arrive to the practicall knowledge of the Languages, to good purpose. With a new Appendix for Travelling into Turkey and the Levant parts." The appendix (pp. 129-140) draws heavily from Sir Henry Blount's account of his trip in 1634-36. Book John Sadler was an important lawyer and constitutional theorist who, among his many offices, at one point served as Oliver Cromwell’s personal secretary. The fact that The Rights of the Kingdom was published in June of 1649 is significant. Charles I had been tried by Parliament six months earlier and was beheaded at the end of the January. Sadler wrote to defend the power of Parliament to try and execute the King through what Parliamentarian historian Paul Seaward describes as “an extended argument that it had always been within the power of parliaments to choose their kings.” Sadler’s evidence is strongly influenced by his philosemitism (friendly attitudes toward the Jewish people), which informs his understanding of both the past and the future. Book A rare copy of the First Edition that includes the folded map in the pocket on the inside rear cover. 4 p.l., xx, 221, [1] p. plates, Index, Advertisements on 26 unnumbered pages, front and rear free endpapers and front and rear pastedowns, folded map (in pocket). There is no publication date but it is generally assigned 1904 based on the date on the map. Copies held in the nine libraries listed in WorldCat are variously dated from 1904 to 1912. The second edition, published in 1920, is clearly marked as such on the title page and includes an additional preface. In addition to serving as the minister of the Union Church in Shanghai from 1899 to 1919, Rev. Book Stated First Edition of the 1956 Caldecott Award Winning book. The dust jacket does not have the award sticker or mention the award, which is the case with later printings. The classic folk tale put to music of Frog's courting of Mouse. In his introductory "Story of This Story," Langstaff traces its origins to Scotland and journey to the American colonies. "The story of the 'Frog and Mouse' became a part of America," he writes, "and belongs to all of us today." The last page of the text includes the tune the author says was sung by "the children of the southern Appalachian mountains ...." The two-page facing illustrations alternate between green, black and white drawings and full-color illustrations. This was originally prepared by Strunk for use in his classes at Cornell University and, based upon the dates on the copyright page, there were apparently two private printings (1918 and 1919) before this first trade edition. Size: Around 7" or slightly taller - Duodecimo (12mo). 52 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is tight though toned from age. Six pages have markings in pencil, usually a check mark for a section, but a few instances of examples of sentence construction on two of the pages. Blue paper over boards bound in blue fabric. The title and author are printed in block within a box and there is an HB CO logo on the front cover. British Museum Short-title Catalogue of Books in French 1601-1700, C1371b. The Bodleian Library at Oxford holds John Locke's copy of this book (Locke 7.262a). Jesuit missionaries in China introduced the Analects of Confucius to the West with the publication in Latin of "Confucius Sinarum philosophus" in 1687. This book followed the next year, not as a complete version of the Analects, but as a compilation that presented Confucius' ethics. In the introduction (Avertissement), the unnamed editor says the public is indebted "to the fathers Intorcetta & Couplet, Jesuits, who translated, from Chinese into Latin, the three books of Confucius, from which we have drawn this piece of morality" (p. Hudson & Goodwin published the first Bible printed in Connecticut the previous year (Hills 168, O'Callaghan, 1809-6, pp. 95-96). This second printing is identical to the first (including the error in I Tim. 4:16 of "thy doctrine" for "the doctrine") with the exception of the date on the separate title pages for the Old and New Testaments. The collation matches that of O'Callaghan's for the original 1809 printing, including the extra materials on the last pages following the Old (Cc-12 verso) and New (Ll-12 verso) Testaments. Hills includes a notice from the 1810 Annual Report of the American Bible Society that it had purchased 2,000 copies from Hudson & Goodwin, with another 2,000 on order. The pages are lightly tanned, but remain bright and without any foxing and only minimal scattered spotting. However, any blank leaves are missing, so the block begins with the title page and ends with the final page of text. As a result, the first and last pages are heavily browned around the edges where they have been exposed to the glue from the inside covers. Bound in calf over boards. The leather is heavily worn, particularly at the corners where the boards are showing through. The spine has six compartments, but is missing the label for the title. The hinges are heavily worn with a 2 1/2" split at the head of the front hinge (though the cords are holding) and 3/8" at the head of the rear hinge.
