Manuscript (apparently autograph) in form of a diary. Dated Marzo 1687 Venetia. On March 5, 1684, Austria, Poland and Venice formed the Holy League, all pledging to fight the Turks and not to conclude any separate peace agreements. The bulk of the war fell to the Austrians.The The Turks were defeated in 1685 at the Siege of Neuhaesusel and at Gran. They had controlled Budapest since 1541, but the Austrian victory September 2, 1686 ended the second siege of this city. This war lasted until the Treaty of Karlowitz Jan 26, 1699, marking the suppression of Turkish power in Europe and the cession of lands to Austria and Poland. 1745. Book entirely in neat ink manuscript. Title page has VERY FINE ORIGINAL pen and ink picture of a female figure wearing a helmet with two large military maps unscrolling above her head on each side. Two cannons flank the woman on each side as well. The picture is exceptionally well-done. Both the title and the picture are so finely rendered that they appear to be printed (which as far as we can tell they are not.) Title page is followed by 3 page letter, one blank page , then 286 pages of text, one blank, 2 page Indice, final blank. Book is stunningly illustrated with 12 foldout maps and diagrams of battleground formations. One foldout map has an armada of tiny ships very finely drawn and each with red flags, facing soldiers in formation on green-outlined shoreline. M. Baxter). Binding very secure and cover Fine. Text is Good with light foxing and spotting on all pages and some toning in text block. Pages slightly different sizes and page edges a bit ruffled. A few pages have short closed marginal tears with no effect on text. A few pages have one or two small wormholes in top margin, again not in text block. Very scarce indeed. .

FOLIO, 41 pages of text in French, handwritten very neatly, illustrated with 9 original artworks by Lauro (8 in color, one in pencil) (8 fullpage, one just half page in size), half vellum bound by George Bayntun (Riviere), Bath, England (world famous book binder, his name is in tiny gilt on end paper), gilt spine letters. No ownership marks. Final ten pages after text are blank but numbered in pencil. NEAR FINE, some foxing on verso of rear and final pages, top corners gently bumped. More than Rare: Unique. 32x16 cm folded in sixths. Sepia-toned ink manuscript letter in Latin on one third of inside surface, with heading in manuscript on outside. Original cord with metal seal formed over and around the strings holding string ends together. Seal is about 1.3 inches in diameter. One side of seal shows a King and Pope. and reads: Veneti ...DVX...Hierpriolus. Verso reads HIH Ronimus Priolus Die Grad VX Venetiar et C, with narrow decorated circular border around edge. Text appears to concern political affairs. Girolamo Priuli (1486? - 1567) was Doge in Venice 1559-1567. Legible. Highly unusual item. .

One sheet of paper, 7 x 11 -1/2 inches (17.5 x 29.5 cm) Fully and finely engraved with words and pictures which folds to 5 -1/2 x 3 inches (14.5 x 7.8 cm) Four lines of contemporary black ink manuscript which is very carefully written and blends in with the artwork. Baumgartner engravings are in many museums including the Metropolitan in New York City. VG lightly toned , slightly worn, no tears. Truly fine quality engraving. Ephemera. .

Four original Russian newspapers, Utro Rosii (March 2, 1917), Ruskoye Slovo (March 2, 1917), Ruskiye Vdimostiy (March 3, 1917) and Ranneye Utro (March 4, 1917) published in Moscow reporting the abdication of the Czar on March 2, 1917 and the establishment of the Provisional Government. These issues also report the appointment of Kerensky and the manifesto on the new government by Miyukov. One issue includes a poem by Valery Brusov, "The Liberation of Russia". Each issue folded into roughly 7 x 11 inches. Each opens up to 20 by 24 inches with 4 pages of text. Appears to be 1725 as Author has given date in 'secret' code by writing at bottom of the title page a sentence mostly in black ink which has certain letters in red ink as capitalized Roman numerals which up to 1725. Tokyo 1904 first edition Ogawa. Oblong 4to., photograph album of views of Japan. Unpaginated (177 ff.) Each photo is identified with facing text in English and brief Japanese identification beneath. Includes a large color foldout map of Japan. Gold silk binding with deep maroon brocade cloth on boards with three bouquets depicted on front and two large flamboyant floral roosters on rear, lovely and delicate gilt patterned end paper. All edges very bright gilt. Binding totally secure; no cracking or loosening inside or out. Cloth is in amazing condition - no wear, no tears and no stains. Near Fine. Rare. Beautiful book. .

Text Fine and clean. ***Of special interest is the brief (3 lines) but clever and grateful inscription written and signed by Chambers in presenting the book to Marjorie Smith. John Barkham and his researcher Marjorie Smith worked in the Foreign News department at Time Magazine along with Chambers and Chambers valued them both very highly. No wear. No dust jacket. 4to., 54 leaves, cloth cover fully decorated with metallic thread in ornate embossed decoration, with sequins sewn in and much fancy knotting of gold and silver threads on what appears to be silk cloth. Book is entirely hand written and hand illustrated with full page watercolor frontis of Chalice; title page "In Depositione SS. Sacramenti" (no place, no date given). 54 leaves of handprinted text in black and red (a few internal pages are blank) with grey line border on every page. Contents are hymns and prayers: Hymnus Pangelingua, Oratio de Sacramento, Preces post Psal. Miserere, Oratio pro Imperatore, Oratio pro infirmo, Oratio pro Serenitate et de S. Vitale, Preces in Gratiarum Actionibus, In Solemnitate SS Reliquianum and so on. One color illustration in text, one page written on different paper and tipped in. No author given but "Bruy., P" is on handwritten label on spine. Title of book on spine is "L'Astrology Manuscrit" but text title is "L'Astronomy." However text is entirely on Astrology. Hardcover. Album is in French, sm.4to., 267p., blue suede boards with 4 large raised spine bands and speckled rouge page ends. We date book to be c. 1800 as Rousseau is mentioned in text. The previous owner's acquisition date stamp is 1898. Blind stamp on first text page and bookplate of Forbes Library from which book was purchased. Cover is Good with slight outward warping of boards and rubbing of blue leather; internally text is VG. Full of elaborate and detailed directions for horoscope calculation and future prediction. Bologna 1685 Gioseffo Longhi. Hardcover. 5-1/2 x 3" full vellum. Title on spine in contemporary brown ink manuscript. 580p. In Italian. This edition was issued without illustrations. This volume has seven letters about Magni's trip to Turkey. Good, small line of writing on titlepage has been inked out neatly; line of ink writing inside front cover and on lower edge of titlepage verso side; rear blank end paper has contemporary ink notes in Italian on both sides. Text binding is secure; text block is beginning to come away from vellum cover along rear hinge however. Very Scarce. .
