Handsome set of the dozen volumes that comprise an important, influential early addition to English women's history, to English politics and the monarchy, to Great Britain's Court and courtiers, and to its Kings and rulers, Queens and fortunes. The O.D.N.B. entry for her notes that the work evidences the author's turn in the 1830s (and that of her sister, the co-author, Elizabeth) towards biography, history and the original manuscripts that she and her sister were shown in the British Museum Library. This is the New Edition, with Corrections and Additions, published by Henry Colburn of London. This edition's Volume I was published in 1844, Volume II in 1842, another in 1841 and then thereafter (noted below). Newburyport, Massachusetts: Edmund M. Blunt, 1800. The Second American Edition from. Hardcover. Fair. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. No matter the "mistakes" and litany of necessitated corrections . . . John Hamilton Moore's (1738-1807) profoundly influential treatise of navigation and nautical safety. A Fair condition copy, text-block still solid, collated as complete, with battered covers but clean internals and fascinating to look at and read. The title page continues, "The Substance of Information every Candidate for the American Navy ought to be acquainted with previous to his being appointed: This, with the Sea Terms, are particularly recommended to the attention of all Young Gentlemen designed for or belonging to, the SEA." Uber-scarce in the trade, there being currently only one additional copy available on-line and fewer than two dozen copies available in libraries. Printed for a number of different booksellers including R. Gosling at the Middle-Temple-Gate in Fleet Street, England. An apparent Second Edition, Corrected Thus, binding two Parts (volumes) published separately into one for the first time. Author is not stated, but the Page of Dedication is printed/signed by "H.R." and underneath the initials a previous owner has penned "Ross" with a long S, and thus likely having been penned prior to about 1790. Scarce in the trade, there being currently no additional sets, complete in two volumes, available on-line. Another fine, collectible set by the same author as of Fragments D'Architecture Antique. Collated as complete in two massively heavy, oversized folio-format volumes. They measure 18 1/2" x 13 1/2" in height and width, respectively, both in First Edition state. 100 fine heliogravures / photogravures in sepiatone by Hector D'Espouy (1854-1929) to each volume. Bound in publisher's original half (i.e., nearly complete) red cloth over burgundy-colored, pebbly, seeming leather in portfolio, with still sharp and distinct gilt lettering to cover and spine. Several of the silk linen cloth ties are absent. Unusually scarce in the trade (there being currently only one additional copy available on-line) and in unusually fine condition. Published to showcase an important gallery exhibition held November 18 through December 31, 1993 at the world-famous Sidney Janis Gallery. Penned by Carroll Janis. The exhibition featured the work of Josef Albers from the period 1961-1969 and that was devoted thematically to Albers' 48" x 48" "Homage to the Square." Quite attractively bound in a 9" x 9" (square! duh!) heavy card stock format, white and red lettering over square black label. Inside horizontal flap titled "Albers" holds an Introduction by Sidney Janis' son, Carroll, a listing of 11 oil-on-masonite works, and a silkscreen reproduction of three of those. Thirteen volumes in 16 make up a complete set of this magisterial encyclopedia of the history of art and artists in Russia and the eventual Soviet Union. Published volume by volume between 1953 and 1969. Russian language texts and with Cyrillic characters, too, which have been omitted here. Bound handsomely in gray buckram cloth, with titles to covers and spines stamped sharply in burgundy, and with neat horizontal borders to spines and blind-stamped borders and designs to covers. Silk-linen ribbon bookmarks attached to each and every volume. Mild wear and tear to volumes beyond some bruised but unbroken tips, occasional waffling of short portions of text-blocks; they look most handsome on the shelf and were made the sturdier by the library-reinforcing tape to front and rear gutters of each volume. Very Good exterior, Near Fine interior set in First Edition state, a consecutive run of issues I-XI, of the preeminent 19th-century French art and art history journal, Gazette des Beaux-Arts. Comprised of six physical volumes plus Tome XIII, 2nd Periode, and Tome XIV, 2nd Periode, thus covering, all in, the period 1859-1876. The first six are bound in Imperial octavo hardcover format, 10 3/4" x 8" tall and wide, respectively; blue and black marbled paper over boards, backed in heavy, pebbled cloth to one-quarter. Five raised bands to spines, gilt-titling and numbering in compartments, with three fleurs-de-lis to each spine. A lot of 63 (sixty-three) volumes in the Britain in Pictures: the British People in Pictures series that was so popular just post-W.W.I.I. Each bound in publisher's original paper over boards covers, some with forward cocks to spines, most with Brodart or other protectors, too; some dust jackets worn but mostly along edges. Most are 47 pp. or 48 pp. in length but with final page unpaginated, usually, and come with a short, unpaginated list of select bibliography; each is replete with illustrations, both hors-texte and on plates printed on high-gloss paper. All in, a fine start on the series that ran to 132 volumes. The series was begun in 1941 by Collins (the fore-runner of HarperCollins) and who wanted to boost the war effort by boosting morale. O.C.L.C. lists a total of six copies in toto, complete, three being located in California, two in Massachusetts, and one in Rhode Island. This is copy #53 of only 75 copies, comprised of 30 prints struck on only one side, and 26 of those 30 are copies from the artists themselves. A matched, full, collated-as-complete set. Each is signed by the woman artist and then numbered. Barbara Parsons' Introduction says that "[m]any of the artists accepted the challenge of the broadside as an opportunity for dynamic experimentation with image and text; others illustrated more conventionally. Another fine contribution in the French language to the magisterial collection of social sciences and humanities literatures in France, Memoires de l'Institut Imperial de France, Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, this being Tome vingt-sixième. Scarce in the trade, there being currently only a single additional copy available on-line. This essay is devoted to the ancient stone-work of and at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, as holy a site for Jews as for Muslims and Christians. Original marginalia at first page says that the essay was delivered first in lectures on the 25th of April, 1862, then twice in May on the 2nd and 9th, and then a second lecture was delivered in April of 1864 on the 7th, 12th, 21st, and 28th. Very Good. Large 8vo 9" - 10. Perhaps a unique item, by any definition exceedingly rare, and printed on a kind of rag paper that feels weighty in the hand (the bite of the type is sharp). WorldCat dot org shows only two institutions that have just a single copy of the 20 October piece. The overall condition is easily Very Good except for four pages that show discoloration and that have short, closed tears. Published between 1778-1789, in Paris. Most of these documents are four pages long with the longest being 12 pages. Bound in the original bluish-gray, diagonally striped lines wraps, and now protected in Mylar. Paper title label over spine is slightly abraded, but the blue pen ink in cursive is exquisite, especially so given that the spine measures no more than a third of an inch across.… Leer más

Dealer stamp, neatly affixed inside flap of first volume. 21 volumes of a once annual publication now scarcely available to the trade in any but odd volumes, Ville de Paris: Commission Municipale du Vieux Paris. Published by the government printer in Paris beginning in 1898, final volume being from 1937 (though spine says 1931), handsomely rebound in tall quarto format, featuring marbled paper over boards, marbled paper paste-downs, leather spines (rubbed), gilt-tooled titles on spines, with five raised bands and four decorative flower illustrations to each spine. Pages toned a bit and sunned along the edges, some scuffing to tips, rubbing to some but not all raised bands, else clean and unmarked of interior; not ex-library; inaugural volume has what appears to be the remains of a former price sticker for the entirety. A fine and scarce item of English history and culture, a most unusual item indeed, a variant edition, the true First Edition having been published in 1712 (Allibone, 1965, p. 656), rebound in marbled paper over boards, polished red calf leather over tips and spine, fine gilt-tooled title to spine, moderate rubbing to, scuffing of edges, spine head and foot. Measures 8" tall and 5 1/4" wide. Underneath author's name on title page is "quo te moeri pedes? An, quo via ducit, in Urbem?" (where are you going to mourn? Stated Second Edition, bound in calf leather, gilt lettered title over red Morocco leather in one spine compartment. Richard Helsham, M.D., was also a Professor of Physics and Natural Philosophy in Dublin, Ireland and, at the time, a contemporary of and friend to the likes of Jonathan Swift. An early reprint of a justifiable classic in English religion and moral philosophy in the form of verse. The title page continues: "To which is added, A Paraphrase on Part of the Book of JOB." The author, Edward Young (1633-1765), was a famous, influential literary light, an English poet, critic and philosopher. This work, published first in 1742, was both financially lucrative for the author and a critical success; it was translated into many different languages including "French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Russian, Welsh, Polish and Magyar" (Hungarian; Wikipedia). Measuring 8 5/8" tall by 5" wide, bound in publisher's brown cloth, blind-stamped illustrations (of holly leaves) to front and rear panels, gilt lettering to spines. Moderate rubbing to and some scuffing of tips, spine heads and feet. Forward cock to both spines. Mild soiling to endpapers, light foxing to texts, some tide-lining here and there, including at endpapers, stitches showing at gutters here and there, some pulling of signatures but still holding firm. A fetching little volume indeed, and quite scarcely available to the trade; O.C.L.C. locates only one copy in America at U.C.L.A., one copy in Canada and two copies in The Netherlands. Only a single volume is currently available on-line. Bound quite handsomely in contemporary full vellum binding with gilt design and gilt lettering on the spine, stamped into a burgundy leather label. Half-inch split to front joint at bottom, else remarkably stiff and sturdy. Colonia is the stated place of publication, but other sources say Venice. 206 pp. First Edition in Italian of the most famous work of Erasmus of Rotterdam. This work was translated probably by Raffale Pastore, known as a translator of various Greek and Latin classics. The book feels marvelous in the hand.
