Fort Lauderdale, FL: PPI Group, 2004. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Published to commemorate the maiden voyage of the Cunard cruise-liner, "Queen Mary 2". A copy of this book was issued to every passenger on that innaugural voyage, and as such, this is now a rare and very collectible item. Published in the style of a glossy magazine, the book contains numerous advertisements from companies connected with the ship, either through her construction, or the provision of her many goods and services. Interspersed with these are articles relating the history of Cunard's earlier 'Queens', and the design and construction of the QM2 herself. Contains 143 numbered pages, 28.5 x 22cm, and illustrated throughout with colour and b&w photos, including many shots of the construction and interior fittings of the new vessel. Laminated, illustrated boards in Fine illustrated dust jacket. Internally, Fine: clean, bright and unmarked in excellent bindings. Looks, feels and smells like new.

NB: This book is published in French. An extremely rare volume, published in 1992 to mark the 40th anniversary of REGA, the Swiss Air Rescue organization. Covers the history and organization of REGA, from its origins in 1952 up till publication date. Contains 194 pages and illustrated throughout with numerous photographs, mostly in colour. A copy in VG+ condition that smells like new inside.

New York: Macmillan, 1930. Hardcover. Good. Just after World War I, the author saw for himself the evidence of carnage and destruction left behind on the battlefield at Verdun. This experience prompted him to ask why so many young men died for so little gain during that bloody conflict. He embarked on a quest to research and publish the answers to that question, revealing for the first time the full extent of military incompetence and sheer stupidity on all sides - American; British; French; German; and Russian. A somewhat controversial book when first published in 1930, it is now widely regarded as an insightful dissection of the military thinking of the time. Perhaps its greatest strength is that Woods managed to retain a degree of impartiality, concentrating on the facts, rather than indulging in an anti-war diatribe. London: Hyam & Co/Favil Press, 1926. Hardcover. Good +. A collector's guide to Derby porcelain, 1750-1770, written by an acknowledged expert in the field. As well as knowledge gained in the years preceeding publication, the author drew on earlier works by Llewellynn Jewit ('The Ceramic Art of Great Britain', 1862), Nightingale ('Contributions Towards the History of Early English Porcelain', 1881), and Bemrose ('Bow, Chelsea and Derby Porcelain', 1898). The end result was the most authorative volume on its subject for the day (and to an extent, remains so). A fascinating read for collectors, antique experts, and enthusiasts of Derby porcelain. Contains 29 pages, 19.5 x 13cm, and illustrated with 4 pages of tissue-protected b&w photos. Grey cardboard printed covers with blue cloth spine; corners and spine lightly bumped with slight wear, otherwise in Good+ condition. Godalming: Ted Smart/Book People, 1996. Reprint. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The author was the first serving SAS commander to write about this secretive regiment. In this volume (first published by W. Kimber in 1980 as 'SAS Operation Oman'), he describes the regiment's role in what is regarded as the most successful counter-insurgency campaign ever fought - the Dhofar War of 1969-76. Despite its success, the SAS involvement was kept secret from the British public for many years and is still little known. This book sets the record straight and is still studied at the British Army Staff College as a text-book on counter-insurgency. The aim was not to kill the enemy, if possible, but to persuade him to see the error of his ways and turn him against his former comrades - something achieved with remarkable skill and professionalism. New York: Balllantine, 1974. Calendar. Very Good/No Jacket. A rare 1975 Edition of the MC. Escher calendar. Those who are familiar with this artist's work will need no further explanation. For those NOT familiar, no explanation is possible (without giving me a headache!). Suffice to say that Escher specialises in the production of complex, apparently impossible, visual conumdrums and makes them seem possible. Twelve of his works are reproduced here in colour and black & white, together of course with the original calendar pages. A fascinating collection to cut out and frame, or keep as a collector's item. Comes in the original cardboard mailing envelope from Ballantine Books (but additionaly protected by me). Page size is 28.5 x 33cm, and all in very good condition. Front cover shows diagonal crease on bottom left corner, else very good.

As the title suggests, it is a collection of essays and writings by some of the greatest scholars and thinkers of its age, encompassing many subjects, such as philosophy, history, society, art, poetry, science and engineering, etc. A real insight into a world that now seems very far away. Green cloth boards with gilt titles and embossed black decor on front, back and spine. Edges and corners are only lightly rubbed, but there is noticeable damage from mildew and/or damp on the boards. Internally, in good condition: pages unmarked and only slightly yellowed, in excellent bindings.

A highly detailed account of 'Operation Grapple' - Britain's series of test drops of her new H-Bomb, code-named Blue Danube, on two bomb ranges in the Pacific. The author dropped the first of these weapons, from a Valiant jet-bomber, on 15 May 1957. More tests were to follow, and this is the full story of how these top-secret experiments were carried out. Though primarily concerned with RAF operations, the author gives a good overall impression of what it was like to live and work in difficult conditions, under extreme security measures. Packed with technical details and illustrations of the aircraft used for the drops, and the many modifications that had to be carried out to prepare them. A well illustrated guide to those fabulous fifties American cars - those beautiful chrome and tailfinned monsters, produced in the days when form took precedent over function in many cases. Each of the major manufacturers is covered, with details of important developments throughout the era, plus 'at a glance' details of price, weights, wheelbases, and engine outputs (BHP) for each year of the decade.
