Descripción:
Holiday House, 1949. First edition. Hard cover. Like New/Very Good. Signed by Author. The fascinating story of a polar bear and her search for her two cubs, this is also a story of the snowbound Arctic and of the surprising number of birds and animals that live in its inhospitable wastes.Kalak was a polar bear whose ferocity and cunning had convinced the Eskimos that she was bewitched. But actually, Kalak, like the Eskimos themselves, was just struggling to find food for herself and her cubs, and to outwit the enemies that lay in wait for her everywhere. In this ruthless land where all species, from the tiny lemmings to the bears and whales and Eskimos, prey on each other just to stay alive, wits are almost as important as strength - a fact which adds greatly to the suspense of "Kalak of the Ice." Fine in very good dust jacket. Signed by author. The dustjacket has a 1/4" piece missing upper spine, with some light chipping and edgewear. Illustrated by Bob Kuhn. Inscribed "With… Leer más

Descripción:
Casa Veja Press, 1975. 2nd Edition. Softcover. Very Good. Some light edgewear to covers. Betty Lou Young (May 18, 1919 – July 1, 2010) was a conservationist, and writer of several books on the Pacific Palisades area. She became deeply involved in her local community of Rustic Canyon, Los Angeles, and spent 50 years chronicling the history and protecting it's small-town profile. In 1954, the family moved into what Betty Lou described as a ‘ranch house knockoff’ on Latimer Lane, kitty-corner from Rustic Canyon Park and the historic eucalyptus grove, which she spent decades protecting from neglect and abandonment. In the 1960s she campaigned to preserve the Santa Monica Mountains against plans for commercial and residential development. Betty Lou’s foray into book publishing grew from a political threat. The Rustic Canyon residents asked her to write a pamphlet on the history of the community as ammunition in the fight to… Leer más

Descripción:
Holiday House, 1947. Third Printing. Hard cover. Like New/Very Good. Signed by Author. This book is a tribute to daring men whose names are forgotten, but whose deeds and spirit illuminate every page of American history. As the westward march of civilization made its slow way over and through successive barriers of forest and prairie and mountain until it had spanned three thousand miles from ocean to ocean, it followed the moccasined paths of nameless men in buckskin. Always, beyond the towns, the settlements, the log-cabin clearings, were "the adventurers of the far side of the hill". "Signed " Jim Kjelgaard" under his name on the title page. Books signed by Kjelgaard most often include a personalized gift inscription; this includes the author's signature only, and is scarce thus. The dustjacket has a small piece missing from top edge of rear panel, with some chipping and edgewear. This is not an x-library copy.

Holiday House, 1949. Third Printing. Hard cover. Like New/Very Good. Signed by Author. The big tawny dog named Smoky refused to hunt with the pack, so old Bill Tolliver gave the 'no-good hound' to Tom Rainse, the new Game Warden. Tom discovered that Smoky's keen bloodhound nose tracked men, not animals, and soon he was hot on the trail of a ring of poachers whose mysterious leader was called 'Black Elk.' These illegal hunters swore they'd kill anyone who got in their way, and now Warden Tom had a special partner who could smell trouble coming.Would this tough mountain man and his fighting hound be able to stop the dangerous Black Elk gang? Or would the gentle elk, deer, and beaver disappear forever from this beautiful wild land?". Inscribed "With all best wishes to? Jim Kjelgaard". A scarce Kjelgaard title, particularly in dustjacket. Damiani, 2013. Second Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good . 8x1x10. A bump to lower front corner. The dustjacket has some light soiling and some light wear. Tom Bianchi’s erotic and celebratory Polaroids of magical summers on Fire Island. Growing up in the 1950s, Tom Bianchi would head into downtown Chicago and pick up 25-cent “physique” magazines at newsstands. In one such magazine, he found a photograph of bodybuilder Glenn Bishop on Fire Island. “Fire Island sounded exotic, perhaps a name made up by the photographer,” he recalls in the preface to his latest monograph. “I had no idea it was a real place. Certainly, I had no idea then that it was a place I would one day call home.” In 1970, fresh out of law school, Bianchi began traveling to New York, and was invited to spend a weekend at Fire Island Pines, where he encountered a community of gay men. Dodd, Mead & Company, 1960. First edition. Hard cover. Like New/No dustjacket. Nature has been called ‘the effect whose cause is God.” Ulysses became an integral part of this effect, and , in spite of the fact that he considered himself the world’s top bumbler—often with plenty of reasons, vehemently vouched for by those left behind in the debris—he proved himself indispensable to the Woodland World into which he characteristically stumbled. In the world of man, Ulysses stumbled and bumbled constantly, but in the world of the forest, where he surprisingly became winter caretaker and lone occupant of an isolated hunters’ lodge, he attained dignity, wisdom and assurance as he employed every faculty of his senses and opened his heart to its mysteries and its beauty—and its animal residents. For Ulysses was not alone for long. During that winter in this beloved woods he… Leer más
