[Habana (Havana, Cuba): Imp. El Score, Luz 45, 1930]. [4]pp. Program. Approx. 9 x 6 inches. Bifolium. Text in English and Spanish. Brief pencil annotation on verso. Folds; minor handling; very good. Official program for the "Habana-Madrid" frontón or jai-alai venue in Havana, Cuba. The Basque/Spanish sport of jai-alai, played extremely fast with a small ball, was popular among gamblers. This program for the evening of March 6, 1930 list five games to be played that night including doubles (partidos) and elimination (quinielas) matches. The leading players and their uniform "colors" are noted, no doubt to assist the following of the fast game-play and to keep track of one's gambling. Admission prices are noted for premium, court side, bleacher, and stand-only admissions. Reserved seating for tourists was also available. English-language texts explain the game, the rules of scoring as well as how to bet on the "pari-mutual" (parimutuel) system for both doubles and elimination singles matches.

[Daytona, 1898]. Photograph on card mount with scalloped edges and ribbon hanger. 7 x 5 inches. Image lightened; faint rubbing in margins; very good. Rare. Invitation to cards and dancing on March 11, 1896 at the Opera House in Daytona, Florida, one of the first events sponsored by the Halifax River Yacht Club. The yacht club's first meeting was held just two months earlier, its organizers eager racers of gaff-rigged catboats. The invitation itself is a photograph. The image incorporates a scene of sailboats racing on the Halifax River and a photo-reproduction of the handwritten invitation. Right around the time of the dance, "Laurence Thompson, a founding father of Daytona and one of the original 13 members, gave permission to construct a wharf from his premises on Beach Street, including the 'riparian rights'." (History of the Halifax River Yacht Club, accessed online) The Halifax River Yacht Club is believed to be the oldest yacht club on the East Coast still at its original location.

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1874. [256]pp. First Edition. Bound in green cloth. 8vo., large folding frontispiece view; modestly illustrated with vignette engravings throughout. Rear board with extensive but mild small bubbling to cloth; a very good and clean copy with bright gilt to spine and upper cover. Story, mission, progress, and multiple descriptions and viewpoints of life at Virginia's Hampton Institute for African Americans and Native Americans; this title published almost a decade after the close of the American Civil War. The content is varied, from a brief section on the Ku Klux Klan to testimonials: one being from a formerly enslaved woman who came to Hampton to be educated; another being a public address by a young woman graduate. From page 171 and onwards, the text is devoted to an early collection of "Cabin and Plantation Songs" with scored music and lyrics printed. The spine is lettered in gilt: "Hampton and Its Students / With the Slave Songs."

Brown suede and papered boards with sunning, scattered stains and small scuffs, half inch loss at heel of spine. Binding good only; internally, clean and very good. The book's ornaments were designed by Samuel Warner; the typography by Newell White; the presswork by George Parker. Provenance, in light pencil: "M.L. [Albany]: Albany Atlas, Nov. 1847. 32pp. 8vo. Self-wrappers. Printed in two columns. Minor creasing at tips; very good. "Free Trade, Free Labor, Free Soil, Free Speech and Free Men." Albany pamphlet issued as a newspaper "Extra" of the Albany Atlas, publishing the anti-slavery proceedings of the 1847 Democratic State Convention at Herkimer, New York. The convention resolved to adopt the provisions of the Congressional proposal known as the Wilmot Proviso which opposed allowing slavery in territories recently acquired from Mexico in the Mexican-American War. Congressman David Wilmot himself attended the convention. His remarks are summarized here and, to give a fairer account of his sentiments, the pamphlet reprints a speech he gave in Albany following the convention. Also found are speeches by former congressmen from New York, C.C. Cambreleng and Bradford R. Wood and John Van Buren, lawyer and son of President Martin Van Buren. New York: Published by Order of the "Union Safety Committee." 1851. 16 pages. 9 x 5¾ inches. Removed; without wrappers. Old stab holes, soft vertical center fold; faint foxing; very good. Sermon in support of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 by Rev. John C. Lord, leading conservative Presbyterian theologian, delivered at the Central Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, New York. Though opposed to slavery, Lord feared dissolution of the Union and urged compromise on the issue of the capture and return of fugitive slaves who were held legally in bondage. Lord's sermon, which engendered at least three published responses, stirred some controversy: "The right of revolution is a civil right, which can be properly exercised only, by a decided majority, under circumstances of aggravated oppression and upon a reasonable assurance of success. It is not for the Church, as such, to determine when a just ground for revolution exists, it belongs to the body of the people in their civil capacity.... The plea of sympathy… Leer más
