Marian Wright Edelman was the first and only Black woman lawyer in Mississippi in those turbulent years after graduation from the Yale Law School in 1963 and admission to the Mississippi Bar in 1964. Her first job was with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, working on civil rights issues during the Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1964. She moved to Washington D.C. in 1968 where she helped organize the Poor People's Campaign of Martin Luther King. In 1973, she founded the Children's Defense Fund. In 2020, Edelman became president emerita of the Children's Defense Fund. Quarter-bound in black with black boards and gold lettering on spine, the book is in collectible condition. The book contains numerous inscriptions from a gathering organized by a ministerial fellowship committee in 2008.

First Edition (stated), first printing with minor shelf wear to boards and slight push to bottom of the spine. Small dent in lower right dedication page. Pages bright without foxing. Unclipped ($25.00) jacket, protected with removable mylar cover, shows little evidence of shelf wear in an edition prone to show considerable wear. Inscribed on flyleaf by author in black marker with "For Tom, Happy Birthday". Ann Rice (1941-2021) was best known for The Vampire Chronicles, the series of books that included the best seller, Interview with the Vampire (1994). Alone with The Witching Hour and Taltos, Lasher forms a triad of novels called the Lives of the Mayfair Witches. Rowan Mayfair, queen of the coven must flee from Lasher, the demon that Rowan finds irresistible. University of Chicago Press. 1946. Fine Second impression showing portrait of negro slave on front of brown cloth boards having copper lettering to spine. Good plus unclipped ($3.50) jacket shows edge-wear, small chip at top of spine, some paper loss on bottom of spine and a closed 0.75 in. cut on upper right of front. The author was the Folklore Editor of the Federal Writer's Project in 1938-1939. The book is the "unconscious history" of slavery as told by former Negro slaves. "for here the last of the ex-slaves become their own historians and record for men the world over the story of one people walking the arduous road to liberty." (jacket back). 6x9.25. 286 pg.

Random House. New York. 2017. Fine First Edition (stated), first printing quater-bound in black with blue cloth boards and gilt lettering to spine. Signed on second flyleaf in blue marker with date (2017) in yellow. Near fine unclipped ($28.00) jacket shows ghost of former signed copy sticker on jacket back. Bardo, the space between life and rebirth sets the stage for the first novel by the author. The story, in relation to Bardo, relates to the grief Abraham Lincoln felt after the death of his son Willie, in 1862. Recall, the Civil War (1861-1865) was raging at the time the story takes place. Ranked as one of the best novels of the past ten years, the book won the Booker Prize (the annual prize for the best novel written in English and published in the UK or Ireland) in 2017. 9.5x6.25 in. 341 pg. with two unnumbered pages (CVII and CV III) at end

Not sure what all the black is about but book appears "as new". Unclipped ($28.00) jacket is likewise fine, almost like new condition. Later printing now protected with removable mylar cover. In order of service: first lady of the U.S. to president Bill Clinton (1993-2001), U.S. Senator from New York (2001-2009), 67th U.S. secretary of state (2009-2013) and the first women to win a presidential nomimation in 2016 by a major U.S. political party. Former library book (New Cassel Center) contains check-out card and markings typical for said edition. Long inscription dated year of publication by former congressman Charles Whalen and his wife (Barbara Whalen) to Dr Helena Magaret on flyleaf. Unclipped ($16.95) jacket now protected in removable mylar cover, shows shelf wear, minor chipping to edges and small 1 in. crease on lower jacket back. "In June 1963 President John Kennedy asked the U.S. Congress to outlaw racial discrimination from American life and law. The Longest Debate is the story of how Congress responded by doing what had to be done-and what could be done only by Congress." (ref. jacket back). Heinemann. London. 1965. Black cloth boards with silver lettering to spine. First Edition with general shelf wear and several more focal areas of wear (see photo). Corner of pg. 3 bent at tip. John le Carre's (1931-2020 third and perhaps best known novel, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold (1963) was so successful he was able to leave M16 and become a full-time writer. Thus, next up came this book in 1965. The story centers on the attempts of The Department (British Intelligence) to verify the presence of Soviet missiles in East Germany. 5.25x8 in. 246 pg.

Libreria De Los Sucesores De Hernando. Madrid. 1913. Very good brown patterned leather with gilt bands and red/green fields on spine. Paper is yellowed with age but without foxing. First flyleaf and both paste-downs wrinkled. Second flyleaf has 1 in. cut showing paper loss on upper right of page. Binding is tight and square. Tacitus (also known as Gaius Cornelius Tacitus) was a Roman orator and public official. Annals was his account of the Roman Empire written in AD 14 to 68. The work contained 16 - 18 books but only books 1 - 4, part of book 5, most of book 6 and books 11 - 16, incomplete, are extant. The forward credits the translation by Coloma with making the edition have less "dryness" when compared to the original work which was written in Latin. I suspect that is true. This version is written in Spanish, but again, apparently not too dry. He was born AD 56 and died c. 120. 4.75x7 in. 341 pg. with index.
