first edition oblong folio (26.8 x 33.5 cms.) 7 plates drawn and engraved by Alken with contemporary hand colouring as issued, 1 leaf of text (printed on recto only), original printed buff wrappers, front wrapper printed to serve as a 'title page', secured by a pink ribbon through stab holes at right-hand margin, wrappers lightly soiled, some dustiness and minor marking at plate margins and a few grubby marks at outer lower marginal corners, very lightly creased where once folded, loosely laced into later stiff plain wrappers. It was reprinted in Baltimore, U.S.A., in 1797 (Welch American Children's Books .. to 1821, 126). Welch attributes the book to Brewer. "These stories were not translated from the Siamese, but the scene was laid in Siam to make the story more interesting to young people" [Welch].Brewer (bap. 1766), writer, "in his youth he served as a midshipman ... and visited America, India, China, and Scandinavia. In 1791 he was made a lieutenant in the Swedish navy. Afterwards abandoning the sea, he read for law in London, and established himself as an attorney" [O.D.N.B.]. first edition, American issue folio (35.5 x 27 cm.) xiv, 487pp., 90 plates of wood-engraved illustrations, numerous large wood-engraved illustrations throughout, publisher's deep brown morocco backed brown cloth (imitating morocco), deep and elaborate border blocked on front cover in gilt and on rear cover in blind, central panel of front cover with 'Switzerland Illustrated' blocked in gilt in large and very elaborate lettering, spine titled and with large pictorial design of a mountain blocked in gilt, all edges gilt, title page lightly foxed, else a particularly nice clean firm copy. Uncommon in the de-luxe binding and rare in this condition.
This is a reissue of the London edition published by Bickers & Son in 1878. These are the London printed sheets with a New York title page.
