Descripción:
London: The Theosophical Publishing House., 1945. First edition. Publisher's original quarter light-blue cloth over beige paper-covered boards with titles in black to the upper board. Lacking the dustwrapper. Illustrated with five full-page black and white photographic plates. Two related newspaper cuttings loosely laid in. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a little toning to the edges of the boards and minor wear to the corners. The contents with a touch of toning to the front free endpaper where the newspaper cuttings have sat are otherwise clean and fresh throughout. An excellent copy. The first edition of this exploratory discussion regarding the famous photographs of the 'Cottingley Fairies', taken by Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths in 1917 and 1920, by the theosophist Edward L. Gardner (1869-1969). Gardner served as the original investigator of these images, which supposedly captured the two girls' encounter with fairies at the bottom of their garden in Cottingley, near… Leer más

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited., 1913. First edition. Quarto. Publisher's original blue-green cloth with embossed gilt vignette depicting fairies to the upper board, elaborate decoration in gilt to the upper board and spine, and titles in gilt to the spine. Top edge gilt. Illustrated with 32 beautiful colour plates by Warwick Goble, each with a captioned tissue guard. Contemporary gift inscription in ink to the front free endpaper, presenting the work to one Kathleen Bell on her tenth birthday. A very good copy indeed, the binding square and firm with a touch of cracking in places, a few small nicks to the spine ends, and a little rubbing to the corners and lower board. The contents with some light scattered foxing to the endpapers/half title and occasionally to page edges, and the odd minor mark to page margins are otherwise in very good order throughout. The plates remain clean, crisp and vivid. An attractive copy, difficult to find in such good condition. A sumptuous collection of classic… Leer más

[Original artwork]., 1937.. Original ink and watercolour drawing on card depicting Titania from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream asleep surrounded by three standing fairies, with other fairy/pixie figures looking on, set within a garden of flowers. Signed, titled, and dated by the artist to the foot. The image measuring 37 x 26cm. Mounted but unframed (50.5 x 38cm including the mount). There is a light ink splash to the centre of the image (affecting the central fairy), otherwise condition is very good. A beautiful, skilfully-executed fairy painting showing the stylistic influence of Edwardian 'Golden Age' illustrators such as Arthur Rackham, by the artist, miniaturist and calligrapher Enid Sybil Mills (1901-1985).

Mills studied at St Martin's School of Art and the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where her teachers included Walter Bayes and Bernard Meninsky. She exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Watercolour Society, and the Royal Miniature Society, of… Leer más
