Housed in a red paper-covered slipcase, good condition with some wear and toning. From a limited edition of 525 numbered copies, this being number 45. William Faulkner (1897-1962) was a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recognized for A Fable in 1955 and The Reivers in 1963. The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying, and Light in August were recognized by The Modern Library on their 1998 list of 100 Best English-language Novels of the 20th Century. Faulkner primarily set his stories in the American South, many of which took place in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County.

Colin Powell (1937-2021) served as the United States Secretary of State during the George W. Bush administration, the first African American to hold the post. He also served as National Security Advisor to President Ronald Reagan (1987-1989) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989-1993. Powell was discussed as a possible Republican presidential contender in 1996 and 2000, but he declined to run both times. He passed away in 2021, survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Alma Powell. Inscribed on verso of front free endpaper: "To dear Victoria Baillie / In recollection of Sunday Nov: 5. 1876 / from Victoria R / Balmoral Nov: 5. 1876." Queen Victoria (1819-1901) and Prince Albert acquired the private Scottish estate known as Balmoral Castle in 1847. Upon the passing of her beloved husband in 1861, Victoria entered a deep state of mourning and hid from the public in several royal estates including Balmoral. The royal family would return to the estate for annual visits in early summer and autumn; a tradition that continued through the reign of Queen Elizabeth.

Stated "new edition" on copyright page. In publisher's very good dust jacket, toning to spine and along edges, chipping along top and bottom edges, closed tear along front bottom spine edge. First published in 1912, this new edition of The Sea & The Jungle contains a new foreword by the author as well as 18 woodcut illustrations by Clare Leighton. A British-American artist, writer and illustrator, Clare Leighton (1898-1989) was best known for her wood engravings, which can be found in numerous books, including Thomas Hardy's The Return of the Native (1929) and Thornton Wilder's The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1929).
