The cloth is rubbed at the corners and edges and spine ends are chipped and worn, 2 small splits between spine and front board, neat gift inscription on the half title verso. Some foxing to early pages. xvi + 692 pages, many illustrations in text and 7 maps on plates, index .

Spine a little toned; edges rubbed with minor wear at corners and spine tips. Scattered foxing, mainly to textblock edge. Overall a Very Good copy. Comprehensive history of the Company from its origins in the 1830s.

Undated as is consistent with the 1876 first edition. Complete with seven maps and vignettes in the text. Frederick Smeeton Williams was an English minister best known for his works on the history of UK railways. The Midland Railway was the third largest railway undertaking in the British Isles, established 1844. In a red cloth binding. Externally, sound with heavy rubbing and staining to boards. Spine browned with splitting to the cloth at the head. Both hinges tender. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places, with map at page 560 loosening. Pages bright and generally clean with age toning to all page edges and occasional light spotting. Ink signature to title page. Good

A very good, clean, tight firm copy of this first edition. Original publisher's brown cloth gilt embossed to the spine and to the front board. The text supported by numerous steel engravings and and 7 maps - as called for. Very neat original owner's ink name, address and date to the head of the dedication page : 'H.T.Manton, Quarry House, Northfield 1876' and also in pencil to the head of the title page. A later owner's name in ink to the head of the front endpaper - name and date. One corner of the front board bumped - quite notably. Head and tail of spine a little rubbed with a fairly closed nik in the cloth at the head of the spine. Some rubbing to the tails of the boards with slight loss of the cloth.
