Pictorial end papers by Keith Henderson. 445 pp.,frontispiece & 5 additional full-page illustrations printed on text paper but not included in the pagination, as well as some smaller vignette illustrations in the text, all by Henderson. Inscribed and Signed by the author on the verso of the front free endpaper: "Anne Furse / from / E.R. Eddison / 28th June 1926". Slight tanning to spine panel and gilt on spine slightly dull; minor foxing to page edges, a nice, attractive copy in the pictorial wrap-around dust jacket which has a tiny bit of chipping at head & foot of spine panel and is slightly darkened along the spine, price corner on upper front flap clipped. In all a magnificent copy, bright & clean, the lettering sharp. ¶ A horror novel written in an archaic style, presented as a true account of the events encountered by a passenger of the ship 'Glen Carrig', lost at sea in the mid-18th Century. A variant binding - most copies known are in black cloth with white chalk lettering (which is invariably damaged or perished). This red cloth with gilt lettering is presumably a later issue binding but is superior to most extant copies surviving in the black binding. Most volumes with one or two attractive portrait engravings. This edition, usually referred to as "Bagster's Edition", is a reprint of John Bell's edition of 1777 - 92, which was issued in 109 volumes. Includes introductions with critical and biographical notes by Samuel Johnson and others. Some spine labels missing; one volume (v. 79-80, Pope Vol 2-3) has the front board sympathetically replaced. The POETS... begins with a lovely set of Chaucer (14 volumes). Note: This is a very large multi-volume set and will require extra postage to ship to most destinations. ¶ Curiously, these were available in two different formats: 124 volumes or 62 double-volumes; and what we have here is the 124 single volumes bound as doubles. Publisher's original maroon cloth with the title and "Festina Lente" coat of arms in gold on the front cover, spine panel lettered in gold. 184 pages. Frontispiece portrait of Dunsany with tissue guard and fifteen additional black & white plates inserted throughout the text. Inscribed by Bierstadt on the front free endpaper: "Mar 1917 / To my dear friend Stuart Walker / who has done much for Dunsany, / more for the drama in America, / and most of all for "the least of these" / Edward Hale Bierstadt." Beneath the inscription Dunsany has boldly signed the book with his quill pen: "Countersigned / Dunsany". London: The Kelmscott Press, 1896. First Printing. Printed paper book label, 1 inch by 2 ½ inches, “FROM THE LIBRARY / OF WILLIAM MORRIS / KELMSCOTT HOUSE / HAMMERSMITH". Printed in Golden Type on Batchelor paper by the Kelmscott Press in November, 1896 while negotiations for the sale of Morris's library were being carried on by his executors, Sydney Cockerell and F. S. Ellis. The labels were printed at the press shortly after Morris's death and and used to identify books from his library. A fine unused example. While Morris had several thousand books in his library, unused copies of his bookplate are rarely encountered. Peterson, A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE KELMSCOTT PRESS, Item D10.1. ¶ William Morris died on 3 October, 1896. Illustrated by Stephen Fabian. 304 pp., frontispiece, chapter vignettes, and seven full-page black & white plates by Fabian (included in the pagination), plus colour dust wrapper artwork by Hannes Bok. 2,100 copies printed, but this is a Very Special Copy, Inscribed by the Editor in blue ink on the front free endpaper "Number 14 of 14 copies for special distribution signed by the editor / Sam Moskowitz". A near fine copy in like dust wrapper, very slightly scuffed. Spine panel a bit darkened and with reading creases;small effaced area on rear panel; a very good, sound copy in the stunning pictorial boards. A rare book. Goldstone & Sweetser Item 6e. ¶ Contains a new 17-page Introduction by the author written specially for this edition, in which he tells the story of writing and publishing the book and quotes some exquisite "reviews". Originally issued in the Keynotes series by John Lane in 1894. Goldstone & Sweetser state that the New Introduction appears only in this edition.

Of three noted binding styles, this is believed to be the second issue. 253 pp. Ink name on front free endpaper, along with a small bookseller's ticket from Watkins in Cecil Court; spine panel & edges of covers a bit faded. Spine lettering very bright; a very good, clean, attractive copy. ¶ A collection of Occult Detective stories. "Dr. Taverner' runs a nursing home for people with unusual mental disorders. He is assisted in the care of these patients by Dr. Rhodes, the medical superintendent, and narrator of the stories. The tales run the gamut of the occult and the supernatural and include vampirism, astral projection, necromancy, cursed objects, spirit communication, spectral manifestations, and very often mind control. A classic collection, rare in the first edition.

Octavo, publisher's original slate grey cloth lettered in gilt on spine, front panel lettered and with an attractive border in pale green. 348 pp, Frontispiece with tissue guard plus 3 additional full-page black & white plates (by Charles Hope Provost) inserted within the text. This UK edition comprises the sheets of the 1902 New York edition with a cancelled title leaf and new binding. A virtually fine copy of a very scarce book. ¶ Episodic novel related by a skull, being the narrated confessions of a 17th Century ne'er-do-well who confesses to a series of crimes after being arrested for treason. The stories are over-the-top in the style of Baron Munchausen and involve fantastic plots with bizarre supernatural elements, culminating in a full-on description of a Witches' Sabbath attended by many Demons (fully and wonderfully described). Moderate foxing to endpapers; a fine copy in excellent condition. ¶ The author's first book, originally issued in this format in 1904, comprising eight tales of the supernatural. A seminal volume of English ghost stories, likely the most important book by the foremost English writer of supernatural fiction.

Title page of the first book printed in red & black. Ancient paper labels at head of spine panels with library numbers, a paper label over the gilt title label on the first volume with the numerals in ink atop the gilt, evidence of paper labels removed from near the spine feet, with some loss to the leather of Vol 2; Overall the bindings are sound and in excellent condition, the text is crisp and clean. An excellent set, all things considered.

Small octavo, original decorated brown cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and gold, rear panel stamped in blind, "M" in "Man" on front cover printed in blue, cream coated endpapers, all edges plain. This First English edition was first issued in 1876 under the "Ward, Lock & Tyler" imprint. Charles T. Tyler ceased to be a partner in Ward, Lock in 1873 but the imprint was not changed until 1878 when the company moved from Paternoster Row to Salisbury Square. This volume was issued as part of Ward, Lock's "Erckmann-Chatrian Library" and is number 19 of the collection's 20 volumes.
