Inked hand written note on the rear flyleaf from publisher Charles Scribner reads: This is one of twenty (sic) copies printed before certain errors in the te xt were discovered.It is also bound in a different cloth than the regu lar edition. Laid in loose is a typed on typing paper list of the th ree errors with page numbers and corrections. The book is bound in blue buckram like cloth with titles and horizontal ruling to the spine and the author's name to upper board gilt. All known copies have the same binding and error sheet but a slightly different hand written ex planation: "this is one of 24 copies, bound in a different cloth from the regular edition and has the above errors in the pages which caught and corrected after 24 sheets had been run. A Good copy i n the original binding. Some wear to the boards, early stitched repair s at the spine edges through both boards and all leaves. Foxing throug h-out. With ownership signature of John W. Hulbert, Member of the Hou se of Representatives from Massachusetts (1814-1817). Also with later (c. 1830) ownership's signature of Ambrose Cowdery, who served during the American Revolution in Capt. Parsons' Comp. of the 2nd Connecticut Regiment. This is the first book of this series of essays written by John Adams in the Gazette of the U.S. during the first year of his te rm as the first Vice President of the United States. Rare, especially so in the original boards. .

First edition bound in purple, but now faded to brown, blind stamped cloth with American eagle design Contains 10 folding Maps, 8vo (6" X 9 ") size, 167 pp followed by 10 maps. Includes large maps of the new American territories, Washington, New Mexico, Dakota, Wisconsin & Minnesota, Colorado, Iowa , Oregon, Kansas , Nebraska and finally California. Maps are in Very Good condition, a few with small, closed tears on a fold or to the outer edges. California has a 2 inch long closed tear at the bottom & a slightly smaller tear to the top edge seam but is otherwise about fine. All 10 maps are still securely bound as is the text report. Each volume measures 13" x 17" and is bound as string-tied portfolios with green cloth spines and ma rbled paper boards. The portfolios have 40 to 45 unbound, loose plates ,, many with multiple images per plate. Spines on the portfolios have various degrees of wear and tear, most have small frays at the tips, s ome have some small chips, some with some tears along the seams. The m arbled boards have light rubbing to their corners. The ties are presen t but some are frayed. The front covers's versos have plates from a Fr ench Architectural Library and a small name stamp from New York archit ect Bradley Delehanty. The plates are all in Very Good or better condi tion with very mild wear. A fairly rare set with all seven volumes. An ultimate reference to European Ironworks. Text is in French.
