Boston : Boston Manufacturers Mutual Fire Insurance Co., 1950 Hard cover, 8vo in blue cloth with titles in gold blocked to top board and on spine, blue endpapers, frontispiece portrait, rubricated title page, illustrations, 253pp., First Edition. This history of the BMMFIC was written by Dane Yorke, who, coincidentally, in 1942 was employed as a city librarian at the Boston's MacArthur Library, and is recorded as participating in a city-twinning broadcast on short wave radio WRUL between Biddeford, Maine and Bideford, Devon, Great Britain, as seen in a press cutting from the MacArthur Library. These broadcasts were considered an important source of morale for the populace of both countries during WW II. (See MacArthurArchivesdotorg). **The present work by this author, however, is a significant and very readable history of Boston industry, and the development of the civic infrastructure that supported it. Topics such as the first public water system in the United States are addressed, as a necessary… Leer más

This collection contains stories of adventurers seeking their fortune only to be confounded by harsh reality, and ends with some Kafka-esque tales of wistful regret. Condition: Very Good. Some water damage to front board, browning to paste-downs. Foxing opposite photograveur illustrations. Otherwise clean. **This is a biographical sketch of the father of the Outdoors Movement, William Henry Harrison Murray (1840-1904), as told by Harry V. Radford , editor and publisher of "Woods and Waters Magazine," in which this was first serialized beginning the Autumn of 1904. (p.3.) Radford describes his friend Murray as "The Great Evangelist of Outdoor Life for the People." This is a psychological look at the forces which shaped the life of an extraordinary man; early poverty, self-sufficiency, the hard farm work from a young age used to pay for his own education; all these character-building ways the young man was led to his later callings as an original thinker, orator, and… Leer más

Boston: Munroe and Francis, 1831 Reprint. Hard cover, 24 mo (measuring 3 1/2 x 6 inches) in half red leather, with marbled paper-covered boards, the title in gilt to the spine. Condition: Very Good Minus. Hinges cracked, but holding firm. Interior pages are sometimes stained and generally foxed. Paper label to front pastedown appears to be an old library label dictating the proper care of books, with a number in old ink upon it. Also, the stamp of John Price, Salem is on the ffep. **The moral tales written by Mrs. Hofland were extremely popular juvenile fiction in the early nineteenth century, both in America and their native England. The didactic tale recounted here was first published in both countries in 1816. Partly autobiographical, the tale is of the travails of a widowed young mother who finds herself with three children. The family's change in fortune brings to light some uncharitable reactions from old friends, and help from unexpected quarters. Mrs. Barbara Hofland (1770-1844) wrote under… Leer más
