The main text is surrounded by commentary. Uniformly bound in original red cloth stamped in gilt, this massive undertaking, tracing Chinese art and calligraphy throughout the ages, illustrated with hundreds of colour reproductions, with many fold out, including three folio volumes which are dedicated entirely to the work of Sun Ch'eng-Tse (1592 or 1593-1676), Lan Ying (1585-1660's0 and Hsu Lin (1462-1538), which have folding concertina like folding plates. Very Good. 1977-1982. Letters. A collection of 2 photographs and approximately 17 handwritten documents, which range from quickly jotted notes to full-length letters, written by the poet Harry Fainlight to his landlady, Esther Whitby who was letting Harry a small garden cell on Harmood Street, in Northwest London, for thirty shillings a week at the time. This collection also includes one letter to Esther from Harry's sister, the renowned poet and close friend Sylvia Plath, Ruth Fainlight. These numerous missives, which include a letter Fainlight wrote on prison stationary while on remand at H.M. Prison, Jebb Avenue, Brixton, London, a note addressed from a psychiatric hospital in Scotland, letters from his parents' home in Sussex, letters from the cottage where he died in Wales, and personal notes left around the house in London where Fainlight rented a room from Whitby [to whom these letters & notes are addressed]. Very Good-. Hardcover. Embossed, decorated, faded green boards; a little worn; corners a little bumped; slight wear to head and tail of spine, but stitched binding intact. Gilt titling on spine a little dull, but very legible. Foredges marbled; top foredges a little dusty; marbling on front and lower foredges a little faded. There are no publishing details in the volume: the "title page" merely and solely states "The British Library", but this is evidently the title of a series rather than the august institution in London's Euston Road. The volume contains the three titles listed above, printed in double columns; the page numbering restarts with each new title, so the book may well comprise three separate publications. This is possibly an early, unrecorded edition of Melville's Redburn. ; 8vo (6" x 9"); 154+223+128 pages .

Hardback bound in original red publisher's cloth, spine a touch sunned, slight edge-wear, a touch scuffed on rear board; Pages lightly age-toned, rough-cut edges, top-edge sprayed red, flecked staining to top and fore-edges, prior bookshop label on front pastedown ['The Roycroft Book & Art Shop', which was a private lending library in Sydney], previous owner's dedication on half-title, sparse foxing throughout; Binding tight. This First Edition copy is one of 3,400 sets of sheets intended for the trade edition of Finnegans Wake, originally printed for Faber. Of this number, 950 were never bound and subsequently discarded by the publishers. Remains of clasp on upper and lower front edges of boards. pp occasionally spotted and stained, but are very supple, and in remarkable condition for a 400-year-old book. Dual Greek/Latin text.
