There are no other marks in the book . The binding is tight . The cloth on the boards is clean . A very scarce Emerson volume .

F. Carr And Co., 1829. Hardcover. Good. Complete set of First Printings of the first publication of the papers of Thomas Jefferson This is an original matched set . It is clear that these books have been together since their publication . . Edited by Jefferson's grandson , Thomas Jefferson Randolph . The textblocks of the four books are in remarkably good condition . All material is present except the large foldout of Jefferson's draft of the Declaration of Independence . There is a ' notice " from the publisher in Volume One stating that the copies of the Declaration did not arrive in time to be shipped with these books . This would seem to indicate that this set of books was one of the first to be shipped . ( I will include a copy of Carr's foldout of draft of the Declaration with these books . ) Each of the books has the name of a previous owner on the second free endpaper . F. Carr And Co., 1829. Hardcover. Very Good. A complete set of the First Printings of the first publication of Thomas Jefferson's papers . Edited by Thomas Jefferson Randolph , Jefferson's grandson . All four volumes are bound in full leather . The first three volumes are matched . Volume four has a different leather on the boards . The textblocks are in very good condition . Light foxing and damp stains in all four books . All material is present including the frontispiece with tissue guard in Volume Four . F. Carr's foldout draft of the Declaration of Independence , showing all the changes that were made , is also in Volume Four and it is in remarkably good condition . The initials of a previous owner and a small inventory sticker are on the front pastedown of the first three books .There is a publishing error in Volume One -- the Index to Volume Two is bound in Volume One following the Index to Volume One . 1839. Hardcover. Very Good. Privately printed for the author. Inscribed by the author. Foxing throughout. In excellent condition , given the age. ENGLAND is the lead poem of fifty-three poems in the book: " Land of the great-of noble ancestry! Queen of the isles, and mistress of the sea ! ".

West , Jordan & Company, 1839. Hardcover. Good Plus. This is the first attempt at a biographical statement on Thomas Jefferson after the initial publication of some of his in 1829 . Dwight , the President of Yale and a leader of the Federalists , notes that the vicious tone of opinion by Federalists on Jefferson has cooled by 1839 . In fact , he admits that the Federalist Party has disappeared . He even notes : " It is very doubtful whether , in the whole extent of political history , a more singular and extraordinary personage can be found than Thomas Jefferson " . He then proceeds for 368 pages to shed doubt on this conclusion . He attacks Jefferson for not offering his full support for the Constitution in 1787 . This from the same Dwight who was the Secretary to the Hartford Convention . He accuses Jefferson of hypocrisy and lack of loyalty for his writings in his " Ana " about George Washington . Gray And Bowen, 1830. Hardcover. Very Good. A very nice copy of the four volume set , published one year after the initial publication by Carr in Charlottesville . This set has been bound in cloth with leather labels on the spines . Rough cut pages . Gold graphics on the spines . The text material is in remarkably good condition The high quality paper has held up very well -- leaving the text easily readable . . Light foxing and unobtrusive damp stains in each book . The hinges in Volume Four have been repaired . There is a tear to the cloth at the foot of the spine on Volume One . Each book has a small sticker with the name of the collector , Herbert R. Strauss, on the front pastedown and a small sticker of the Abraham Lincoln Bookshop on the back pastedown . All material is present including the large foldout draft of the Declaration of Independence showing the many changes that were made . A very attractive set .

This is the first major biography of Jefferson , published simultaneously in London and Philadelphia . This first major biography of Jefferson was written by George Tucker , a professor at the University Of Virginia who had been appointed to his post by Jefferson on the recommendation of James Madison . . The spine panels have been beautifully replaced on these two books , while retaining the original leather covered boards . The textblocks are in nice condition with some light foxing . The books are clean except for some marks on the first free endpaper of each book . This set would be a worthy addition to the library of any collector of Jefferson material .

Tucker was a Professor at Jefferson's University of Virginia . He had been recommended for his position at the University by James Madison . In volume one of this work he prints his letter to Madison sending him a copy of this manuscript and Madison's favorable response . Tucker had previously published , anonomously , a negative assessment of Jefferson's description of African slaves in the south in his NOTES ON VIRGINIA . Apparently , neither Jefferson nor Madison were aware of this previous publication . See Allan Taylor's THOMAS JEFFERSON'S EDUCATION on this point and more on Tucker . Tucker's work published in these two volumes is generally viewed as the first biography of Jefferson . Jefferson had left his papers to his grandson , Thomas Jefferson Randolph and Randolph had published some of them in the late 1820's .In 1848 the papers were turned over to H. A. Washington , and , working quickly , he got the material to publication in these volumes in 1853 - 1854 . Washigton offered little in the way of notes or annotations but he did try to select " everything which possesses perminent public interest either on account of its intrinsic value , or as a matter of history , or as illustrating the character of the distinguished Author , or as embodying his views upon the almost endless variety of topics , philosophical , moral , religious , scietific , historical , and political ,so ably discussed by him . Yale University Press, 1911. Hardcover. Very Good Plus. An excellent set of the Limited Edition . This set is number 174 of 250 printed . Farrand's work is first-rate and this is one of the most important publications about the history of American government and politics . Three Volumes , complete set . The books are clean , no marks of any kind except for the NYT obituary for Farrand attached to the second free endpaper of volume one . The bindings and all signatures are tight on the three large volumes . The boards show light wear and rugging to the corners . Yale made an exceptional publishing effort on this limited edition . The books are beautifully designed .The paper is exquisite . The print is special . And , this is an excellent copy of the set . In 1986 Yale published a new edition of this work and added a supplement volume , volume IV . I will include a copy of this supplement volume with the shipment of this original set .

The White House, 1936. Hardcover. Near Fine. Limited Edition . This copy is number 155 of 2500 . Full Leather . This was the campaign book for 1936 . The White House had these books rebound in handsome leather and sold them to help pay the debts of the campaign . President Roosevelt SIGNED each copy on the limitation page under a pastel image of the White House . The name of the donor was printed in gold gilt on the front cover . In this case the buyer was John W. Childress , the Director Of Public Works for the District of Columbia Childress was a close associate of Senator Claude Swanson , now a member of Roosevelt's cabinet . In this copy the original , dynamic and colorful stiff wraps were preserved and bound-in .

Each volume has an Index to that volume and Volume IX has an Index to the complete set . Jefferson bequeathed all of his manuscript papers to his grandson , Thomas Jefferson Randolph . Randolph published a small percentage of these papers serving as his own editor . In 1848 Congress appropriated the funds to buy all of the manuscripts and to pay for their publication . H. A.
